Default Xbox Series X Scam - Can anyone advise?

Hey folks, hope you are keeping well. My cousin has just phoned me (he knows I am a full time ebayer) for advice because he ordered an Xbox Series X from a private seller on Ebay and has received a box with a pair of old trainers and two large cans of soup inside it! (i admit I laughed out loud when he told me that bit).

He says the seller he bought it from has no other sales history (as far as he can tell) and thinks it just someone trying their luck. I told him to open a case with Ebay of course, and I imagine they will refund him as they usualy side with a buyer but I thought I would ask on here in case anyone can give better advice for how to deal with it? He paid over £750 for it and he is panicking now in case he loses his money and cant afford another one!

Thanks in advance!

Did he pay via credit card too? Did he take pictures of the box?

Nah he paid via Paypal. What are the photos for? Surely the photo wouldn't prove anything? I presume he will have to upload them on his INAD case, although I spoke to him before he opened it, so Ill maybe message him in case he doesn't think of doing it

He has rung Ebay and complained about it, and they told him that it has been happening loads with xbox's and that he should open a INAD case and he should be refunded. I was just hoping there could be other ways to speed up the process, as he seems fairly stressed about it (hes young and skint) and I reckon it will take at least a week if not two before Ebay do anything about it

It is a bit of a slow process he just needs to make sure he gets that item not as described case opened ASAP and if he does then just have to wait but it is absolutely a good idea to take pictures of the parcel

James is right OP and even if your friend is stressed, patience will serve him well once he opens up the case and pursues it actively

these days cases are resolved pretty fast by bots.
INAD,if seller does not respond in xdays ,ask Ebay t o step in and it would send him a return shipping label, once tracking shows delivered, seller has x number of days to refund,if not,Ebay will do it for him,.
Seller has to refund in full (including his origional shipping ).
dont worry, the minute he opens a case,Ebay will withhold the payment from his Paypal account,if he has not withdrawn it.
His last resort is to go to his cc issuer and file a chargeback.
Things are bad out there, people have no money for food and soon be evicted,so your money will be used for food and rent, worry about it later,
OOPS,if he has 2 cans of soup,he is not starving,

Soup Scammed

Lol

Well he has two options really, both will result in a refund.

INAD on eBay, they give you a label, you send the soup back, once delivered you escalate to ebay and they pretend they are working hard deciphering the scam and they refund you

OR

Paypal INAD > Empty Box > they make him sign an affidavit > issue a refund within 24 hours with out him having to send back anything.

thanks for the advice everyone, he has already opened the INAD on Ebay, so I guess the Paypal INAD case can be a backup in the unlikely event that Ebay don't resolve the problem! I didn't know Paypal could resolve a case so quickly, I falsely assumed they would be just as bad as Ebay.

Just to update, my cousin opened the INAD case with Ebay, and uploaded pictures of the box contents. The seller is of course denying it and claiming it must have been the courier, although either way thats the seller's problem. My cousin sent me a link to the seller's account and it looks like he is a first time seller, so looks like maybe he isn't familiar with Ebay and thought he could just scam someone and keep the money

Or the seller is doing this again and again on new accounts...

Oh sorry, its not a new account, it has lots of buying history going back years but zero seller feedback, so I'm guessing this is the first time he has listed an item for sale. I'm thinking he just saw all the news articles about ebay console scams and thought he would try it himself.

Not making any suggestion in this particular example, but I wonder how many counter-scalpers have received a playstation and claimed it was tins of soup.

If the buyer opens PP dispute then ebay will close the INAD in seller's favour. Kindly ask your friend to be patient and not to open PP dispute before ebay makes final decision and appeal gets denied.

Simplest and guaranteed ways to solve this is

step 1. INAD
step 2. Provide information of incident and photos on INAD
step 3. Wait seller make it right period
step 4. Click on ask ebay to step in button if its there or initiate chat with ebay if that button is not visible
step 5. Reply to ebay email and provide any requested information without fail within allowed time
step 6. receive your refund

If you make any mistake and your appeal on ebay gets denied then PP will be there for your friend

And if Paypal and eBay both refuse and your friend is willing to lose his Paypal account over it ... straight to the credit card and file a chargeback. But that's a last resort.

That's correct.

ebay > PP > CC

thats the right sequence and one should move to next point after loosing on first option.

Yeah I see what you're saying, and I agree completely, as always there will be scammers on both sides. We were worried about that in case Ebay didn't believe him or wouldn't help. I believe him though, he doesn't know enough about Ebay to attempt something like that, and he sounded incredibly stressed when he phoned me about it

Thank you very much for that clear information and for putting it in order for me. I have been selling on Ebay for years but thankfully have a low return rate and I always just accept the returns and write them off as business expenses, so I dont' have much experience with fighting for refunds etc
Do you know which information Ebay will require? It might be a good idea to have it all ready for them, so it can be uploaded immediately when requested

hopefully it won't come to that, but I bet he would be willing to burn his Paypal account for it, as he's skint and can't afford to replace it until the refund is processed

It depends on which website he made purchade.
I mean, ebay us, ebay uk, ebay au etc.

Transaction site of the purchase affects required documentation.

Oh really? I didn't know that. It would be Ebay UK, as the seller is based in England

Just to update the thread, my cousin contacted actionfraud and gave them all the details and then messaged the seller to let him know he may be contacted during the investigation. With a bit of luck he will panic and refund the money!
