Default Access to VM with VPN, using REMOTE DESKTOP

Hi Guys,

We recently had over 10 VPNs with 24vc. All VPNs were operated on the same PC running VMware with different VM's (each VPN on a different VM).

To avoid linking, we used the Win7 built in firewall to disconnect ingoing+outgoing traffic in case of a VPN disconnection (using the home/public network profiles).

It all worked well, until all of our accounts got linked and deleted on the same day and we lost confidence in this system. The link was due to all of the VMs reverting to the main computer's IP, at different times.

We need your professional technical help to make sure we do everything right this time.

Please help us with the following issues:

Do you know of an extra layer to add to the firewall in case of VPN disconnection so that the VM will not revert to the main computer's original IP no matter what happens?

We have a few employees who require the windows built-in Remote Desktop tool to connect to each VM running a VPN (Teamviewer is way too slow). We tried setting up access to the VM (while connected to the VPN) using Remote Desktop but failed. Can you please advise how we can set up Windows Remote Desktop connection to a VM running VPN?

If we manage to solve these 2 issues we should be fine.
We would appreciate your specific and knowledgeable assistance.

Thank you

Using RDP to remotely access a VM isn't the best way to go about that, IMO. Have you considered storing your VM's on a server, or some other type of networked storage? That way you could access your VM's from any device on your network. It would also be a lot faster than working over a Remote Desktop connection.

About your other question, there are all kinds of "VPN kill switches" out there. Here's one I found just now. http://vpnetmon.webs.com/

The problem is, to get an IP I would need a VPN/VPS.
Since most VPS IPs are blacklisted - that leaves me with Fresh VPN.
However, I cannot connect remotely (and my employees) to a VPN IP since the ports are not open...

If you store your VM's on networked storage, and have your VPN connection configured within the VM (using either Softether or Windows to connect), then you would be able to connect your VM to your VPN connection.

It would be the same as booting your VM's off your local hard drive and then connecting to your VPN from within the VM, as most of us who use VM's do. Only difference is you would be booting from network storage, so your VM's would be accessible from anywhere on your network.

I'm guessing RDP could be blocking your VPN when trying to remotely access your VM's that way.

I am running this exact same setup, using the built in Windows 7 firewall and have not had an issue so far. How did the firewall fail to reveal your real IP?! This is quite worrying...

Do you install a different windows ISO on each VM?
Does Amazon have a way to link by the same Windows installation ISO?

You don't have too but if you really are worried, then use several Operating Systems.
