No. I have confirmed this with reliable sources that understand the technology. The only way a website can get your MAC address is by placing a program on your computer. And no mainstream website is likely to do that because the backlash would be huge.

That MAY change in the future, because - as I understand it - IPv6 uses a part of the MAC address to form the overall IPv6 address. But I do not know too much about that and we are still living in an IPv4 world. I WOULD keep my ears open for any new developments, although we should have plenty of warning since most of us would know if we were using an IPv6 address (they look WAY DIFFERENT from IPv4 addresses).

I though it stood for Multiple User? ie the person has signed up multiple accounts and is banned for this reason.

I have to agree in this case, it may well be for posting pish. :thumb:

Actually, Callidus, you're mistaken. MU in Vbulliten stands for "Miserable User". Users can still post, and aren't banned, but do suffer a variety of hilarious misfortunes.

When classed as miserable, a member suffers ;

1. Slow response (time delay) on every page (20 to 60 seconds default).
2. A chance they will get the "server busy" message (50% by default).
3. A chance that no search facilities will be available (75% by default).
4. A chance they will get redirected to another preset page (25% & homepage by default).
5. A chance they will simply get a blank page (25% by default).
6. Post flood limit increased by a defined factor (10 times by default).
7. If they get past all this okay, then they will be served up their proper page.

That's not the way to cheer up a miserable person

The point is to discourage them from posting, not cheer them up.
