Amazon credit card algorithm

I recently learned if you get a new credit /prepaid card issued (if you report it lost) the prior number is linked to your new cards number permanently. This is especially essential for things such as refunds issued to your old card go to your new card.

Does Amazon possess any sort of algorithm which can determine this link?

Its a big "What if" but I thought id ask.
