Do amazon check vat or utr numbers?
 

Just wanted to know if they check utr numbers? Got an account which has just been hit with verification after 3 years being verified (its a 9 year old account). I provided a random utr number 3 years ago and it worked. Is it still the same?

They can check if the numbers look valid, yes. Randomly made up numbers wont work. That's about it.

Dam,what do I do now? Been asked to provide one of the following

One of the following documents issued by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) within the last year:
- Class 2 National Insurance Contributions (NICs) Bill
- Online VAT Certificate
- Self-Assessment notice to complete a tax return
- Letter confirming your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number
- Self Assessment Statement
- Short Tax Return.

Problem is I have none of the above, 3 years ago I provided a UTR letter and it worked no problem. The accounts been lying dormant this year with hardly any sales but don't wanna lose it.

The check digit is what they confirm, google that to get more information

Yes they can check the VAT number, and they can check the validity of the UTR number.

They can check the UTR is the correct formula. They dont always check, but better to be safe than sorry

I cant find relevant Amazon.ca regarding GST/HST collection so I am trying to investigate other marketplaces to see how things work there to make judgments.

Ive learned VAT numbers (Required over £85,000 sales) can be publically searched for validity. In canada we have a similar number called a "Business Number" which is required to collect sales tax on Amazon.ca and can also be publically searched for valdility.

The differences ive noticed are Amazon.ca doesn't seem to validate BN's while Amazon.uk validates their VAT's. How long does it take for Amazon.uk to validate your VAT number once updated?

They would validate an UTR instantly if they want

VAT number they would have to search but again that can be instant if they want to. Avoid going over £85,000 a year in sales and you wont need to worry about a VAT

UTR should always be correct though

UTR is like a SSN (If I understand correctly) and VAT for sales tax.

Can you please elaborate how long VAT validations take? For example, you add a VAT number to your account, does Amazon always check it? Do they sometimes not check it? Do they notify you they are checking it? Does your account stay "suspended" while they "validate" the VAT number? Whats the average time frame for them to validate the VAT number?

Would really appreciate if you could give some insight to the above questions so I can compare with my own situation

No it’s very different to an SSN

I don’t know RE the VAT number. Best to run an account avoiding getting a VAT request IMO

The only thing they have in common is that they are unique. Beyond that, they are completely different.

If you are not well acquainted with terms and processes in other countries, you really should stick to doing business in your own country. Or otherwise, speak to a professional.
