People still using VCCs for Amazon US?
 

Haven't done this in a while, but are people still using VCCs for the creation of Amazon accounts?

Do they work?
Do they work not simply to sign up, but also to get through to the payment stage?

Yes they still work, there are several amazon VCC sellers on the aspkin service section

Yes, vcc work great but you have to find good sellers because most sell expensive.

this is tangential to the op; here's my experience:

-- I set up a new buying account (in the U.S.)
-- i tried to start a prime trial, for which i tried to use a vcc; was denied
-- got an automated email that payment needs to be via "real" credit card ("so that we can bill you when the trial period is over")
-- subsequently, chat rep confirmed vcc could be used for purchases, but not to pay for prime
...
-- then i tried buying 3-month gift-of-prime w an amazon e-card; didn't work; got an email asking for receipt (which I don't have as I was given it as a ... guess what ... gift); it was also likely a rookie mistake to use an gift-e-card for the first purchase
-- i'm curious to use a physical amz gift card, w/ receipt, to buy prime, but suspect I'll just lose that money :-/
