Unauthorized Account Access
I'll start by saying that I created my Amazon.ca account years ago and never once purchased anything. I quickly found out that Paypal is not accepted and I have never owned a Credit Card. I forgot this account existed.
Fast forward to January 23rd, 2020. I received an e-mail stating that I need to attach a new Credit Card to my account as I owe $700 for something I purchased on January 13th.
I went into investigation mode and found out:
- Someone gained Unauthorized Access to my account on January 13th
- They added a Visa Credit Card as a payment method
- They changed my name and shipping address
- They purchased a $700 Hair Dryer and shipped it to Quebec
- And finally they got their money back from Visa by reversing the payment
I contacted Amazon by phone and they told me to wait 24 hours for a specialist to e-mail me. I waited 24 hours and called again. I received the same person who said "Like I told you yesterday, please wait 24-48 hours." It's now been four days and I have received four e-mails. Each e-mail simply says exactly the same thing as the first e-mail on the 23rd. "Please attach a new Credit Card to your account to pay for your purchase."
I reply to these e-mails with all of the above information and I continue to receive robot replies. I tried to use the Amazon forums for assistance but my account is locked. I tried using a "Contact Us: E-mail" page and it gave me an error when hitting send.
One of the e-mails I received was a tracking number for the package. When I looked it up on Purolator it said the package was successfully delivered along with a name and address. I highly suspect the name is untrue and the person is long gone from the location.
Should I go to the police?
Any advice on what I should do or who to contact next?
Thank you for your assistance!
