EAN Numbers

I understand Amazon have changed their policy on EAN numbers in that they now have to be registered. Can anyone give me some insight and suggest a good place to get them?

They tell me I need to pay just under £150 to register just to get started - is there any other way do you know?

I've just been acceted for Amazon Handmade and apparently I do not need the EAN numbers - thank you so much for your help
