selling name brands?

Trying to get all the information i Can about amazon.
I understand you need permission from a company to sell their products on amazon. But i recently met someone who was selling brand names on amazon and I know they had no connections with the "higher up".

How is this possible?

Not always approved but yes you should apply first.
