Selling Clothing on Amazon

So i heard that you arent able to sell clothing items on amazon until or unless you are approved to sell the clothing items by them? is that true? or are you able to sell clothing items on amazon just like any other items that are being sold on amazon?

But if you do need to be approved by amazon specially for clothing..has anyone ever done it? can anyone help me? thanks :)

Amazon has their apparel category locked down until Fall of 2010. They are not accepting any new applications. It has been this way since Fall of 2008. It is pretty ridiculous. I've been bugging them once a month the entire time but I am still not in.

If they do open up after Fall as guitarca18 says, you will need some documents/proof of what your selling. One major hurdle I remember is that you will need a website that shows what is is your selling. Even then, the apparel has to be shot in a specific way for approval. Jump through many hoops you will have to go through.

*sigh* Rechereche...one would hope that with this long lag hopefully they are doing away with stuff like that..I'll tell you one thing..the vendors on there approved already must be making a killing..

Do you know more details into what they require?
and do you know if theres a chance that they do not require it anymore?

I sold clothing on Amazon for about a year through my old job.
I had to jump through a LOT of hoops to be able to do it.
I had MANY personal phone calls with them.
Your clothing MUST have valid SKU numbers also.
If they don't you have to get a SKU waver.
The waver is the hardest part to get.
It took me 3 weeks to get mine back then.

oh wow. i see. what exactly is a SKU number though? and where do you get the weaver from? Anyone here can help me get approved to sell clothing on amazon?
would sunglasses/shoes be considered in the clothing category?

This probably isn't the right catalog for you, my friend.

Selfmade17: Nothing right now will get you approved. They are not accepting new applicants until Fall 2010. So get in line..I've been waiting for almost 1.5 years. And who knows what they will ask for once they do open the category back up.

I believe the category is Clothing & Apparel. Not sure if that includes sunglasses/shoes but I would assume so.

On amazon shoes/sunglasses are subtitled under accessories...would i be able to sell those without getting approved for selling clothing? would anyone know or has anyone sold shoes/sunglasses on amazon before?

teedon 06-18-2010 09:40 AM

I know one of my customers sell the shoes on amazon with no problem, but i do not know the other products

shoes, accessories, clothes, beauty, jewelry - all restricted categories

It all seems REALLY dumb for me, and I just don't understand why they are restricting this. And not sure why they MUST have skus for fashion items as they change with season and even faster, but thats the way it is

Their approval process is a mystery, maybe they think they are sexier by being mysterious, who knows but
to be considered you MUST have a website, and they like you to be a high volume seller to approve you , plus the pics must comply with their requ, plus a few other mystery points no one knows..
be prepared to wait several decades

They restrict it so the currently approved sellers can dictate the prices in a manner favorable to them. Inside aggreements for price fixing, basically. If they open the category (which I doubt - I expect them to extend the date again later), new entrants would drive prices down. Less profit for the current group and thus, less profit for Amazon.

I bet many of you thought the restriction had to do with phaikness.
