Default amazon commissions

i am new to amazon. i thought the commissions were like 15%? i just sold a book and amazon took 60%!!

Buyer's price: $4.90
Amazon commission: -$3.08
Shipping credit: $3.99
Your earnings: $5.81

what is that? why did they take so much?

also, off topic here, but why do they tell you to use a search function in this forum and when you do they tell you to make a new thread? i posted in a 2 month old thread because it covered my topic and they closed it telling me to make a new thread. so which is it? start new threads for every question or use the search? thanks

Not sure about that one... It doesn't look right to me. Amazon commission is 8-12% depending on category. Looks like they took 75%. What category are you selling in?

....

Odds are you can find a lot of answers using searches. If you read through the forums with to avail, make a new thread.

it is just a book. i am trying to get some feedback. yea, it looked strange to me. i just copied and pasted it from the email they sent.

as far as a search, like i said, i did that before and they locked the thread after i did it and said make a new thread instead of using old ones. i hate to make a new thread for a simple question, but i guess i am not supposed to

Here is how you got hit....

Amazon Fees
Referral Fee: 15% x $4.90----($0.74)
Variable Closing Fee-----------($1.35)
Fixed per-item closing fee----($0.99)
TOTAL--------------------------($3.08)

The only fee you can avoid is the $0.99 closing fee.
You avoid this one by getting a Pro Merchant Subscription for $40 per month.
As long as you sell more than 40 items a month it will pay for its self.

what are those fees for? and if they are going to take way over 50% of your sales, why in the world would anyone sell on amazon?

edit- thanks for the answer

All those fees are SET fees.
Only 1 of them varies with the cost of the item.

A different example:
Amazon Fees
Referral Fee: 15% x $100.00----($15.00)
Variable Closing Fee--------------($1.35)
Fixed per-item closing fee-------($0.99)
TOTAL-----------------------------($17.34)

This example item is only losing a TOTAL of 17.34% in fees, not 50%.

Good breakdown HWGA - did not know about the variable closing fee - that's why the low end stuff gets hit hard on the sale.
