My first encounter with an Amazon Scammer!

So this is first time someone has tried to scam me using a strange method like this.

So basically I put up an expensive phone on Amazon, later that day I got a message from someone asking if it was in good condition and if i could send him pictures of the phone to his email (this was through the amazon mail system at first), i didn't think nothing of it - since on the listings you don't have an option of putting up your own pictures on Amazon - So i upload some and send them off to the persons email which he had given me - I then check my email later on that day to find the same email that you would get from Amazon saying it the Sold, dispatch now everything looked legit.

But I then scrolled down abit to find a Nigerian address??? So i then logged onto Amazon to check my orders and it had not sold yet :suspicious:

Have now reported the buyer to Amazon - however a quick google search reveals that others have been victims to this scams like this and have actually sent out items without double checking with their orders.

So my advice now would be:
  • Always double check your emails and amazon orders, make sure addresses match - names can sometimes differ though.
  • Don't fall for Amazon is threatening you emails aswell about sending items out (when the orders are not your actually Amazon profile) - because these scammers don't give up easily.
  • Make note off the real Amazon email address that come through when you sold items!! these people can be very sneaky and with a slight change to confuse the poor seller
  • Don't open any attachments!!!! thats just asking for trouble!! :boink:
  • Don't click anything asking you to verify your account through a link in an email!

I was also going to mention you shouldn't send pictures of the item your selling when someones asks for them - however i think it's necessary that you send pictures to customers who want them, if they ask you to send them to your email then think twice, I think next time i'll just use imageshack or tinypic for uploading pics and sending them. :thumb:

Just a heads up for any unexpecting sellers out there.

:doh: If i knew it was for the lumber jack family - I would of sent it out asap!!

Better this than actually getting screwed by a buyer on amazon.

Now we talking - Grandpa Tom would have been happy - why did you blow it? =(

On a serious note, another reason why NOT to do shipping based on e-mail list - go on to A az on account and ship confirmed orders only. Another throw off is international address.

Send me something nice though - Thankful too =)

Good stuff!! Yeah i've heard about similar stories online in general, got to be aware and "pc smart" to avoid these crooks!!

BigCJ 04-16-2012 05:43 PM

LOL! Glad you didn't fall for the okie doke.

Had it before on a new account.
Listed a gaming system
Got an email asking for photos/pics of the system outside of amazon
Then like an hour later, got hit with the 'sold' email

I check my order history and NOTHING. Im like 'ok, maybe the system is slow...'

Get to waiting another 20 mins then go to check the email again, re-reading everything

ALLLL the way at the bottom is the Nigerian address.

So I milk this guy for all hes worth.

He ended up spending around 50 bucks in calling cards over 2 weeks, then finally figured it out that he wasnt getting anything and cursed me out in a voicemail :pound:

I dont see the scam at all? Tried and failed yeah as you get NOTHING from emails from amazons. No address or anything like that. Amazon doesnt tell u who bought the item through email, where to ship, the buyers email or any other info

MM78 04-16-2012 10:57 PM

Thankful, you should mail the scammer a pic of you giving him/her the bird!

Easy way to protect yourself... NEVER ship orders based on anything other than what is in the orders section of your Amazon account. I don't even read the order emails I get from Amazon. Only their administrative emails and customer inquiries.

This is a new Amazon twist on the old Craigslist/classifieds Paypal Nigerian fraud stuff that's still going around.

They would never get one over on me like that nice attempt though, sadly some people still fall for that rubbish.

I think i'm going to send the person a letter instead with bold vulgar words telling them were to stick it! Thats the least i can do.... I hope i'm covered by Amazon A to Z ha!

Skys The Limit 04-17-2012 05:17 AM

Hope I do not get the emails can you show us them ?

Thankful 04-17-2012 05:37 AM

Amazon informed me to remove it - I no longer have the emails.

AZ never include the shipping address of customer in their sold, ship now email. You need to login to your seller account to get the address. Only a fool will fall for the scam posted in the OP.

Yup. This was during the playstation 2 boom when people were trying to get their hands on the fat systems due to the metal inside.

This guy tried REALLY hard to get me to ship through email. I had a business phone forwarding number and amazon gave it to him.

The things he said were HILARIOUS! To get me to ship.

My personal fave was ' You have to ship my order! My Mother is dying! you do not want that on your conscience! We need the money!'

Me: 'Sir, with all due respect....why are you buying a Playstation 2 of your family member is dying????'

*Dead phone line*

:p

I had some one play the switch game. Sent them a 150.00 box set brand new authentic and they signed for it. sent in a sturdy cardboard box well bubbled wrapped. he emails me the same day he received it basically within minutes saying the item is severely damaged and wants to return it for a refund.
Long story short He returned me his damaged set in the mail. Not even the one I sent him. I had marked the outer wrapper with a magic marker . scammed me lost money and a brand new set. his set was worth less than half the price..Amazon did not care to do anything. right after that I sent the guy a box of Dog Sh!t
