EAN numbers

Hopefully no-one will flame me for this

I have a small account selling on Amazon. It has been maturing for several months and I now want to add some items for a client that manufactures his own stuff. They are asking for an EAN number and as far as I have been able to see this can involve quite a layout in hard cash before you start selling.

It's also in the Apparel section which I understand requires 'approval' from Amazon.

Anyone have any advise?
