Maximum number of IP addresses on 1 router
 

Hey I was just wondering... Most of us here change IP address of their routers by changing MAC address of the router and then resetting it.

Okay.

BUT, I start to realize that we only have a range/scale that we can use, which is like 150 different IPs?
Example: Let's say I have now: 111.11.111.180
Then I change MAC and get: 111.11.111.196
I change again and get: 111.11.111.137
Range is: 111.11.111.(100-254)???

Only last 3 digits change and also after surfing the net I realize we have only like 150 IPs to get. Is it correct? And what to do next after all of them get used?

Also, upon opening new accouts IPs are very similar and coming from the same area. Can Amazon catch it?

I do not think that Amazon cares about the proximity of the addresses to each other as I have many many Amazon account with very similar IP addresses but still different and have not had any issues. Also I do not think where the IP is originating from matter either as one of my internet connections when you run the IP shows it is out of Kansas and the other connection from another company shows they are out of Wisconsin and I am only in one of those states so.....

As far as the range goes after you change IPs more and more you will start getting the last two sets of numbers changing (but not the first two sets) this means you will have MANY MANY IPs to go through. Likely you will never go through them all. Also from my experience my internet providers seem to change the front two sets of numbers about once a year so that should help keep things mixed up as well. Be careful however sometimes two different MAC addresses will eventually repeat the same IP between each other in which case you will then need to change up one of the MAC addresses..... make certain you are keeping a VERY clear log of all MAC and IPs used! This is critical!

I am trying to find a way to see if I am able to request previously used IPs for a particular MAC if possible to help with this issue but so far have been unable to do so though I know there is a way to request it I just need to do more research on it.....

EAch time I get a new IP I log it and then run a search to ensure that IP is not showing up under any other MACs I have used. Each time I change a MAC I also run a search on my spreadsheet to ensure I have not used it before.

I figured out the way how to change IP to the one you want. I use Linksys E1200 Router. Which one do you use? Maybe I can give you some useful advice on how to change IPs so that you are in control of what IP you want to have and not get a random one...

I use a Cisco valet and have a few different Linksys routers that I use.

I THINK it probably has to do with telling your router your using a static IP, inputting the IP you want along with the proper DNS etc etc...... Is that kind of along line of what you are doing?

Yeah, what I do on my router is:
1) Going into 192.168.1.1 settings...
2) Switch from Automatic DHCP to Static IP
3) Put any IP I want within the allowed range.

Nothing complicated but it took me some time to figure out these IPs and stuff.. I was a total 0 when I started...

When you start changing your IP as much I do however you will start finding that somebody else has already been assigned your previously used IP that you want to request which make it kind of a pain because you never know which IPs will still be available for your use when you go back to grab them again, kind of turns it into a hope and pray game.

Given that it seems like it wouldn't work that well for me but Ill start playing with it some more and see if I can come up with a solution that will work for me.
