Just change the checking account number?

Instead of opening up a new checking account, has anyone considered having the checking account number changed? Has anyone done it? Is it a good idea?

I've wondered the same thing. Can we just say we think someone else may have access to it and ask the Bank to give us a new one? Or, would they have us close it and open a new one?

Not a good idea

I think it is safe to assume that if you tell the bank someone else has access to your account, then they may flag it for fraud protection, and then if you have deposits going in with mis-matched name that might be a problem. Why not try to just open a second account with same bank. If they ask what for, (which I don't feel they should ask) but if they did and you feel compelled to answer then just say it is you emergency savings.

agree with the above... why would you tell them that there is fraud on your account and have them flag it and then use it for stealth? It's like shooting shoot yourself in the foot:doh:

You read into that too deep. You could easily say your girlfriend had access to the account but you are no longer together, so you'd like the account number changed. I never said anything about fraud on the account. Why would they flag it for such a small thing?

If it were being used for fraud, the fraudster wouldn't be putting money in, he'd be taking money out. :fight:

that sounds like a one time thing w/ the girlfriend, not sure why you wouldnt just open more accounts, banks can be friendly if you go in with a smile and a check :)

I understand where your coming from, it was just a thought. Pertains more to the Prepaid cards that have a Bank account attached, like the ones that only allow you one account per social (which is what I use). Those cards are when this would come into play. Wonder if closing the account on one of these cards, then reopening another one a few days later would give a new BA number. I'll be trying that if I ever get shut down.
