New router to change MAC address?
 

Hey guys,

I purchased Amazon Ghost yesterday, had a skim through, and now im going back through the book again properly, setting everything up as i read it.

So far i have had no problems, until i have got to the Internet Setup (Connecting MAC address) section.

Unfortunately i have a broadband router with built in modem. I notice that the ebook recommends just buying a new seperate modem and 3rd party router. Is it not possible to just buy a completely new router? Will this not have a completely different MAC address?

Sorry, im not great with this sort of thing. Please help me out :)

You don't need a new Mac Address.

You only need to change the MAC address if you have a sticky IP.

To test this take a note of your IP, unplug the modem, plug it back in, wait for it to fully restart and take note of the new IP address. If it has changed then you have no need to change MAC addresses.

You are leasing IP from ISP unless you pay for a static IP, so IP will change each time you reconnect. However, there is a period of time after you disconnect your modem for the ISP to unassign current IP from your router Mac address. This period could be hours or days.
Dialup modem is different. It is on demand service, so you will almost get new IP everytime you reconnect.
With Cable & DSL modems, you usually have to change Mac address on your router (not modem) to get a new IP. You also need power cycle your modem.

Too late I already went out and bought a new router, I'm so impatient :)

So I'm pretty much clean now, I just need to get a pre paid telephone number and sort out bank. Bank might be a problem for me as I have bad credit though :s

Just get a basic account. No credit checks. Some charge £14.99 a month for it, but lots of offers about to get 6 months free. Smile also offer an instant savings account which you should be able to pass. You can also open second accounts with any banks your already with, worth asking in branch.

Thanks for the info James, unfortunately I don't have an existing bank account, our last amazon account was linked to my father in laws bank account as he was the main owner of the business. I will give smile a try though, thanks

Get a new bank account under YOUR name - use it for STEALTH...is it hard to do for you?

Go Metro, Barclays or Natwest. Say you want it to pay your bills. Tell them you don't want any credit and you should be able to get a basic account.

Metro might do a soft check to confirm where you are living and might give you a current account

I will be going to my local bank later today to see if I can open another account, that is if time permits
