Changing Router's MAC Address

In the Amazon Ghost Guide, it discusses changing the Router's MAC address. My router is a Netgear (192.168.1.64). amd when I get to the router setup screen, it gives me 3 choices to change this value...
1. Use Default
2. Use computer's MAC address.
3. Enter your own MAC address.

I assume that number 2 is the correct approach. Correct?

JamesNorth101 08-26-2013 04:37 PM

Option 3 is what you want.

Copy default MAC address, change the last digit in the MAC address, apply, reset and your good to go.

Freakzilla 08-26-2013 04:37 PM

you don't need to do this. new IP and user account is enough.

It is depend on the OP ISP and how it setup. He might get new IP by changing MAC address

For me, I have to use my own mac ID to change my IP address. Just change the last digit of the mac ID. If you have multiple accounts, I would designate a mac ID for each account.

Before i read Amazon Ghost,i didn't know about Mac ADDRESS. JUST use difference computer open accounts and log on with different computer for half a year. All of them are working. Maybe no different IP add is enough? Because it is not easy to change MAC for fibe Cable connection.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO CHANGE YOUR MAC ADDRESS!!! DO SOME RESEARCH.

If you really, honestly, true to your heart believe that Amazon can see your MAC ADDRESS, then why don't you search on Google what is my MAC ADDRESS.

Guess, what there isn't a single damn website out there in the universe that will tell you WHAT YOUR MAC ADDRESS IS. Do you know why? BECAUSE AMAZON CANNOT SEE WHAT YOUR MAC ADDRESS IS.

It is a FACT.

A lot of debate on this MAC identification by Amazon - quite a few computer specialists have indicated that Az does not see the MAC...

TonyAlmeida 08-29-2013 07:47 AM

Forget about that fact that Amazon can see your MAC or not.

Many people need to change their MAC to get new IP. Please don't try to confuse other.

I know that Amazon CAN'T see my MAC but I change it anyway. Why? Because I need a new/different IP

well said tony. As I stated earlier about changing my MAC address, this is purely for changing my IP address. This is the only way my ISP will allow me to obtain a different IP. I'm sure it's the same way for many others.

Yes, it does seem to be a hot topic. I will chime in w/ my comments...

I have a background in telephony and networking (it is my day job). I don't know why some people think Amazon can see your computer's MAC address. It goes against everything we were taught in school (mainly the tcp/ip protocol stack and the osi model).

The OSI model is the backbone of network architecture. It defines how one device can communicate to another.

OSI Model

Application Layer
Presentation Layer
Session Layer
Transport Layer
Network Layer
Data Layer
Physical Layer

Let's use the most common example (home network). Your home network is considered a LAN (local area network). It has a modem and a wifi router. As we all know, you are typically assigned an IP from your ISP (such as Comcast or Verizon). Your wifi router assigns private IPs (192.168.0.0/24) to each of your devices.

What happens when you browse a web page?

Your default gateway (physical layer) sends the request through your computer's MAC (data layer). The request to display the web page is sent through your network card (data layer). Your computer then sends the request the appropriate web server (network layer).

To open the communication to the web server, request goes through TCP (transport layer). The web browser opens a tcp connection to the web server (session layer) to display the html page to you. The web browser then converts it to a readable format (presentation layer). The remote server which has the web page stored displays on your browser (application layer).

This may be the long way of saying it in a post, but Amazon is on the "back end" of the OSI model and cannot detect anything in the physical or data link layers. They can't tell if you're using a CAT5 or CAT6 cable to connect to your router...impossible.

When others say Amazon can see your MAC address...this is partly true. They can see your router's MAC address. Your router's MAC is transmitted within the TCP/IP stack. But they cannot see your computer's MAC address.

I will say, they will LINK you using browser fingerprinting methods. Your browser stores information about your computer that Amazon uses to detect you. This is far more advanced than cookies and you need to pay closer attention to your browser fingerprint than your computer's MAC.

Peoples like me do NEED to change MAC anyway all day regardless the FACT that Amazon CAN NOT see my MAC address.

Stop telling peoples that DON'T NEED to change MAC address. Many of us DO NEED to change the MAC to get new IP.

:)

You're confusing everything I just said. There are 2 MAC addresses - your computer MAC address and your router MAC adddress.

Yes, you need to change your router's MAC address to obtain an IP... I dedicated this paragraph on the two...

There is no reason to spoof your computer's MAC address.

I notice a lot people are getting confused between a computer's mac address and a router mac address.

An0nym0u$ - Do iPhone's have any sort of Mac Address that needs to be changed? I been using my iPhone for tethering across many accounts and accessed banned accounts through there too. Have not been linked due to that tho.

Yes, phones have MAC addresses too. It is usually under Settings and About Device.

Browsing directly on a phone/tablet is a little tricky and is not recommended for stealth. If you are using any ebay or amazon app...don't. There is information that is embedded in your phone that you agree to allow the app owner (ebay/amazon) to see.

If you are only using the phone as a hotspot/tethering, then no...the phone device's mac address is not seen.

TonyAlmeida 08-29-2013 11:13 AM

From the begin of the Stealth game, I never use a router. Connect direct from PC to Modem :)

Then that sounds like you have a combo router/modem. Does our modem allow for wifi devices to connect to it? If so, your modem is your router and yes it has its own MAC address as I've stated previously.

Your PC will also have a MAC address (this is the MAC address I keep saying is not detectable...not your modem/router's MAC).

It is not possible for anyone to see the MAC address of your PC. Unless they had some sort of Java program running on it, which would then access your network card on your PC to retrieve it.

TonyAlmeida 08-29-2013 11:28 AM

:)

Like I said I use no router at all. My modem is just a regular cable modem. I don't see the need of router for my needed.

My regular cable modem have no wifi (no router function combine). And yes, it does have it own MAC and the MAC tie to my Internet account (can't change this MAC unless I want to use some neighborhood Internet account to download)

I did not said that Amazon can see my MAC anywhere in the post.

An0nym0u$ 08-29-2013 11:37 AM

And I never said people need to stop changing their MAC address to get a new IP...
