Dialup IP location
 

If I am using dialup and let's say I live in Syracuse but I use a New York City Dialup number to connect to the internet.

Will my IP location show as New York City or Syracuse?

The IP geolocation finders are not 100% accurate. It is actually closer to 75% accuracy when correlating IP to cities...so it is really an approximation ]of your physical location.

As long as you are in the general area, then there is no flag being raised. Now, if you were in NY and you're geolocatoin shows Florida, then that might raise an eyebrow or two.

I know that using broadband is different. It tries to trace the location from your house.

However since I am connecting through a dialup number that is located 100 miles away, won't it try to give IP location from the dialup number I am using to connect? Because it is dialup where will the IP trace stop? I don't think it will go past the dialup number I am using to connect to the internet?

You follow the difference?

It will give the dialup of the SERVICE ACCESS NUMBER. I use dial-up all the time so if I dial with a NY number, the IP shown is NY.

Turn off your wifi access to the computer to prevent possible IP HUGE change showing if dial-up gets disconnected.

So just to be clear, if my phone number at my house is (412) 555-5678

and I use my AOL software to dialup to the internet through (678)555-5555

The IP trace will trace it back to my home (412) 555-5678?

No the IP will trace to the IP provided by (678)555-5555.

Let's say that the Area Code is for a TX access number...the IP would show up as you are in XCity, TX and NOT the (412) territory.

Dial-up is so old school that it's SO effective hah - minus the slow speed...thankfully eB doesnt use flashmedia and gizmos...YET

That's great news! That means If I live in PA, I can say I live in California as long as I use a ISP dialup number in California. I thin Amazon uses IP location when they do a manual review and this will completely hide it. I needed some good news today!

Thanks for the tip about disconnected Wifi.

I wonder if I can use LogMeIn software and log on to my computer remotely through the broadband, dial up my ISP, disconnect from WIfi and then be able to reconnect through LogMeIn (I think that's the name of the popular remote software) when it is connected by dialup?

I was very hesitant to sell the same items on different stealth accounts because of IP location. However, it looks like dial up solves this issue

Kelly441 - you are forgetting one thing...if you disconnect from WiFi, your connection to logmein will be lost...you could theoretically connect with dial-up THEN close up the WiFi but I feel you would lose the logmein connection (POSSIBLY) since the connection is VERY VERY slow with dial-up. I can't recommend this process with logmein or any other remote access software.

Well that sucks. Well when I'm traveling I will have to have a phone line to do my dialup then.

About selling the same items on different stealth accounts. Many people say it is safe to do as long as the accounts are in another city. Still dial-up seems safer because IP location won't be the same. All other stealth information would be different of course so the only thing linking the two accounts would be same product and I doubt they would link two accounts 100 miles away from each other with all other stealth info being totally different.

Just got dialup and they do trace your IP back to your house no matter what dialup number you use to access the internet. In fact the IP location is exactly the same as my broadband down to the sixth digit. So much for fooling them with IP location and so much for solving the traveling issue.

IP location is not a problem for me. I have an account with Denver CO address and always use my IP from Houston from the begin of account open till now. And all this account item ship from NY. So far so good for me.

Did you DISCONNECT your broadband like I had indicated?

My computer has no broadband/wifi connection when on dial-up...IP shows as my dial-up access IP ONLY.

Yes, in fact I unplugged it. Tony, with one account it's not a issue, but when you are running multiple accounts form the same exact IP location
