Amazon listing high in Google Organic results
 

I have noticed competitors have their Amazon listing indexed in Google organic results in the #1 position. It is very hard to compete against this.

Is it bad to use adwords to try and earn #1 placement in the adwords section to your Amazon listing?

Since Amazon is pretty huge, you don't really have to worry about the SEO end of things. Product searches on google lead to Amazon quite well on their own.

You could try adwords, but you should maybe ask yourself if using Amazon's own sponsored links could be more beneficial. That would mean that people already navigating around in Amazon would be more likely to find your listing. Generally people browsing Amazon are more likely to purchase than people navigating elsewhere.

If you had a webstore/website "powered by" Amazon, then I would say that Adwords might be a solid option.

Under the terms of Adwords you are not allowed to advertise amazon as you can only advertise one website per Adwords account.

SEO on a listing can have massive results and as you say it's very difficult to compete against this. I've had a lot or success with optimising my listings for google and it does make a difference. Sometimes a huge one.
