Amazon: Free shipping vs charging shipping...

Has anyone tested free shipping vs charging for shipping. I have always used a fixed shipping price model, but I see more and more sellers offering free shipping (and building the shipping price into their item cost)

Just looking for some insight....

i charge for shipping but i have the default options which are $3.99 and 6.99 for expedite shipping which works out great for me as my items are small.

you do pay more fees when you include shipping into the item cost so be aware of that.

I have done extensive testing. When I sell with free shipping, I end up with less $$$ in my pocket on small items.

Free shipping is a killer. When items are returned, you lose even more.

I've thought about it...but charging shipping is an easy way to charge a restocking fee if an item is returned...I charge the shipping on return items. it keeps it simple.

Another plus is newbie buyers cant confuse free shipping and prime shipping.
