It's definitely exaggerated and not being used in the way you're thinking of. People make nutjob conspiracies all the time without any sources to back it up.

Even if MS do have ability to remotely access your files, ask yourself this question. Out of the billion people that are also using Windows, why would MS have any specific interest in me?

Yes, many big distros do collect statistics from you in the same way Windows telemetry works:

Collection and use of your data

We may collect certain non-personally-identifiable information, which is located on your computer. The information collected may include statistics relating to how often data is transferred, and performance metrics in relation to software and configuration. You agree this information may be retained and used by Canonical. Canonical may disclose any or all personal data and contents you have sent, posted or published if required to comply with applicable law or the order or requirement of a court, administrative agency or other governmental body. All other use of your personal data is subject to Canonical's privacy policy.

Once again, almost all commercial services collects anonymous diagnostic and usage statistics all the time, you just don't even notice it. They're not interested in what kinky porn site you've been visiting or how many gigabytes of porn you've stashed on your hard drive. This concept is nothing new at all and companies has been doing it ever since personal computers and internet has been around.

I'm not saying this isn't something you should be aloof of, nor is it something that's 100% right to do, but it's most certainly not something you need to be paranoid about.

Thanks Binary - Nice responses :thumb:

I wish Microsoft would release a Windows 10 Lite ... basically Windows XP, but with a fresh touch. I mean, honestly, Windows XP is just so nimble, its an absolute delight to use.

From reading through all these threads, looks like windows XP is my best option for stealth?

I just a little confused about all the negative feedback on windows 10. I maybe naive, why should i be worried about Microsoft preserving, disclosing personal information etc on windows 10. It's just Amazon that I don't want to know that I have stealth accounts. I mean Micro Soft will never be aware of this and if they are, i see no reason why they would ever consider disclosing this information to Amazon

Windows XP is a great option for stealth. You can run multiple instances concurrently with very low RAM.
