Question on VM (found an error in Amazon Ghost?)

So on page 11 of Amazon ghost Aspkin recommends using VMware Player. The cost of this has stopped me from ever getting it but I just noticed he says "we're going to use the FREEWARE VMware Player" and links out to the $150 software. Was this freeware when the ebook was written back in 2012 or is there a way to get it/an alternative for free?

You can open an amazon account with a VM from amazon EC2 ;)
They are changing IP everydays ;)
