Update on Identity Check
 

New to the forums but old to Paypal/eBay Australia.

My understanding is the following

Paypal have access to

- Passport Numbers
- White Pages (manual database they purchased)
- Electoral Role
- THEY DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO LICENCE NUMBERS
- They use the services of Veda Advantage
- Have purchased many clients lists from newspapers and magazines for identity verification purposes.
- Cannot track or find names for Merchant Numbers if you apply for a credit card merchant account
- Are using a basic facial recognition software as of December last year for uploaded photo ID
- Running random tracks of Image trails. ie camera model/shutter speed etc..

While this posting has some truth in it, they way it's written seems kind of sketch and nefarious ha - move it.

Nothing intentional in my writing style, just a collection of some experiences over the last twelve months. I often read this forum and felt slack I had never posted.

When you comment 'Some truth' could you help myself and other forum members by outlining which points are not truthful and incorrect ?

Facial recognition? Seriously?

They ahd Polar Rose develop a solution for them. They trialed it throughout 2010. I believe Apple have now purchased Polar Rose however the contract with Paypal still stands.

No problem newsellerjg - was just that your post had some nuances that might seem sketch.

That being said, you seem to have a much grasp on the technology Pa yp al employs - I sincerely doubt they have access to passport numbers - they use a lot of public servce (at the agent level) but at the risk management level, I am sure they go deep in.

That does make sense I reckon. And I've heard from various people that Paypal AU atleast is able to verify Australian PP numbers. I cannot prove or disprove this because I've only used my own PP to verify my own a/c, and for stealth a/c I just used DL and 18 + card just to be on the safe side.

And using facial recognition isn;t too far fetched idea. I mean I thought they already had something similar in motion until I found out from this forum that they dont and went ahead and verified 4 a/c with same DL. But considering how big a company they are, I personally dont think it's far fetched to think they WOULD start using such services if they havent already.

Also, let's just bear in mind we're talking only AU paypal here and as has been pointed out numerous times before, there seems to be quite a fair bit of inconsistenties between AU paypal and the rest of the world.

There is one commercial service available here that claim to verify Aus Passports and Visas. I have also found that when Paypal want to verify your Australian account the first thing asked for was your passport number (I have not had to do this for a few months) I can not see the point of them asking for this if they could not verify the information in some way. I have the link to one of these commercial services who will let you verify yourself for no fee (if anyone wants the link let me know) ....
