Anyone of you manage to register an ABN for your ebay? How long does it usually take?

ABN rego (sole trader) usually takes up to 10 days. You usually download the form off the ATO website, fill out, check it thoroughly, then send it off. If there's an error, ATO sends it back. If your tax agent did the paperwork the turnaround time may be sllightly less :ranger:

I did the registration online, but did not receive any replies. It's been almost 4 weeks already. Wonder what is going on... should I send in a hardcopy instead?

Leave it until Monday, when they re-open and phone them. Hours 9--6

would an abn help lessen the chances of being suspended on paypal?

I think official business registration is the way to go to avoid flags.
Ebay don't like people selling a lot of stuff without setting it up as a business account.

Paypal will definately raise flags if you have a personal account and thousands of $$$$ going through it. :deadhorse:
This happened to me recently and I was only juuuuust able to sweet talk them into removing my limitation 'after I upgraded it to a business account'
supplied them with all the documentation with any personal information blacked out like bank details, elctricity company acc number etc.

I supplied the same ID to Ebay but they won't remove my limitation I can only buy not sell now. Because "We cannot identify that some of the items you are selling are genuine" Pfffffff :pout:

Once I registered my ABN as a sole trader I added several 'trading as' names to it. Set up a business bank account for each under the individual trading name and matched names with the names on seperate Paypal Business Account Trading names.

Don't directly link your ebay accounts to your paypal accounts this just makes it easier for Paypal to snoop around in the ebay account and have a look at total sales and items sold.

On another note: You are not required to register for GST until you are making over $50,000 for that ABN which will be your total stock colaboration, not just profit.

I'm pretty sure you need a business name to get an ABN. It would defeat the purpose getting a business number in your personal name :) as this would fit the description of a tax file number. Which you will also need to register an ABN

But it is a requirement of Australian Business Name that the name fits the description of what you are selling.... They won't like it if your business name is Zombie Corpse Productions and you are selling Vacume Cleaner sprockets. This stops trade mark issues.

having said that you could keep your business name generic enough to fit the description for all the items you are selling or plan to sell. Or register additional names under that ABN so that they fit the description of items being sold.
