Help with Aus Debt Collectors from Paypal
 

In the beginning of the year I was stupid enough to fall for a scam drop shipper. Was selling their products on ebay, got suspended, started giving everyones money back etc etc...
I was using Paypal, and after my disputes were resolved I decided I will remove my bank account from my Paypal account and close it. I had $2.70 in there and when I ended my account they asked if I wanted to donate that to charity, so I clicked yes and closed my account. All good I thought, out of that one...

I am in Australia, and today I received a letter from a debt collector saying I owe Paypal $62.09 and that they apparently have made numerous attempts to clear this matter. I didn't hear anything at all from Paypal after I closed my account, no emails, no phone calls, no letters.
So this debt collection letter is the first I have heard of this debt.
I don't want to have to pay it.
Does anyone know what I can do about it?

For any amount of debt your best action is to dispute it. Look at this site.

Disputing a debt

I called the debt collectors almost 2 weeks ago now and told them it's the first I heard about it. I asked them to send me any proof of the debt and any proof that Paypal had "contacted" me. They said that Paypal emailed me but I know for certain that they did not.
I have not since heard from the debt collectors. Hopefully they realised they have nothing on me and aren't pursuing the matter.

Good approach. Keep on telling them to prove the debt. Use that site in the future if you need. I would expect you to get a few more calls before the matter is dropped.:spy:

maybe the debt collectors are just stalkers, who knows you closed paypal account and want to make some money
