eBay withdraws restrictions on payment choices
Sydney, 4 April 2008
As you know, Paymate protested strongly in response to eBay Australia’s proposed ban on payment methods other than PayPal, the service owned by eBay. We raised awareness of the issue and made a substantial submission to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), who quoted us in making their decision to turn down eBay.
eBay has yesteday withdrawn its notification to the ACCC about removing other payment methods. Instead eBay will continue to allow all existing payment methods on eBay.com.au.
In its draft notice, the ACCC considered that “PayPal offers sellers more protection than some other methods of payment, however, PayPal is not unique in this respect as it offers similar seller protection to that provided by Paymate.”[5.160]
“Accordingly, the ACCC considers the notified conduct will generate negligible public benefits for sellers on eBay.”[5.162]
“The evidence available does not support the view that PayPal is the most secure method of payment, or offers the best service for all transactions.”[5.173].
Dilip Rao, Managing Director for Paymate commented, “We applaud this decision and look forward to helping make eBay a safe and secure trading platform. We would like to thank the many, many people who pledged us their support and encouraged us to take the battle up to the ACCC.”
What are the positive outcomes from all this?
The ACCC process allowed us to have Paymate's services compared to PayPal's by an independent party (the ACCC) with no commercial interests.
Paymate is one of the safest payment methods in use in Australia and New Zealand.
As a brokered payment service, Paymate assesses both buyer-side risks and seller-side risks before completing a transaction. Buyers are protected when using a credit card via Paymate for the entire value of the payment and can get their money back if goods are not delivered or not as described. Sellers are protected from fraudulent use of credit cards by our world-class risk assessment systems based on neural network and rules technology.
Buyers and sellers don’t have to share their financial details when using Paymate, which is one of the biggest fears consumers have when transacting online. In addition:
1. Paymate has been rated over 8/10 on client satisfaction by our clients since launch in October 2001, ironically in partnership with eBay.
2. Buyers do NOT have to register to make payment via credit cards.
3. Sellers receive payment directly into their bank accounts, with no delays or transfer fees. 'Straight Through Payments' are deposited the same night for even faster order fulfilment.
