Bell Express Vu and D-Link
 

Hi,
Does anyone use Express Vu which I guess is DSL and D-Link Router?
Is there a simple procedure to get your IP address to change? (Before using the router, all I had to do was unplug everything for 30 seconds.)

what model is it?

login via browser to your router - http://192.168.0.1

You should be able to change your MAC address in your router which in most circumstances changes your IP

your MAC will look something like 00:22:01:09:F9:C3

change anything in the last 3 sets of coupled digits, leave 1st 3 octets as they are.

Try this and see if this helps and report back.

If you get bell all you have to do is unplug the modem and plug it back in. But, overall I have not liked bell. Rogers is easy to hack and you can get higher speeds. Some people sell hacked modems. But, bell is really easy to change ip's, I could not figure how to change ip for rogers.

Hacked modems are not viable for Rogers/3Web. Yet.

Thanks for the help. Router quit working entirely a few hours ago. Go figure. Will replace tomorrow and try suggestions. Just bought a new, second computer and so am using my router again for the first time in a year. Empty pockets, I have a P.C., not Mac, don't know if that makes a difference.
Yozalo, just uplugging worked when hooked directly to the internet, but did not seem to work with the router hooked up. Will see what happens when I replace it.

Here's a thought:

When you are using the DSL with the router and it's time for an IP hop, disconnect the DSL from the router, then reboot the DSL. Wait for the DSL to wake up FULLY. Then connect it to the router.

If you reset while DSL and router are connected, the DSL probably tries for IP based on the router MAC every time. If the router is out of the equation, the DSL should get whatever IP it can grab.

The reason it didn't do that direct to PC but did do it direct to router: a router is exactly that - a router - and unless you tell the router otherwise, it has DHCP capability. Not a perfect explanation, but there's the short version.

Happy to report that POWderPUFgrl's suggestion about disconnecting the DSL from the router first worked like a charm. I.P. changed and it was simple! I am guessing that would work with most router's and DSL hookups.
(Did try the logging into my router solution first, but that did not work.)

I change mines all the time with MAC Spoofing. I have a Dlink DIR 615 and a Moto SB 5100. Change ur mac, unplug modem and router at same time, plug them back in 20 seconds after and wait till u get a connection. If it takes more than 2 mins to get a connection, unplug both for 20 secs again and replug.

You may not need to unplug the modem, in that process. Most cable modems drop IP when they lose connection to the router. Change the router MAC, then power off and on the router, not a warm reboot of the router, but a full power off then on. That should do. And only takes 1/2 a minute.

For some of us lucky people, simply change the router MAC, then from the router config - release DHCP then renew DHCP. NEW IP!!! Within a few seconds. Some devices can do this without anything needing a reboot.

My setup uses Linksys WRT54G v4 or earlier for the router. My modems are some flavor of Motorola (and clones) SB5100 or SB5101. That includes Ambit 250 or 255, Scientific Atlanta Webstar 2100 (r1 and r2), Some Terayons (715 and 715x), 3Com Sharkfin, and others I just can't think of right this moment.

Basically, if the main modem chip is a Broadcom 3348 or 3349, you don't reboot anything. Just change router MAC, drop DHCP, raise DHCP, and GO!

Try those and see what you get.

Vicvelcro - are u familiar with Hexoware 1.1 39 and sb5101 modems. If not flashing yourself and you buy one already flashed is hexoware or sierra based firmware easier to use? do you need to use opendns to bypass activation page? I am pretty technical but i have not played with premods

What's the deal with the hacked modems? Is the purpose to get free internet or to hide yourself?
