Debt collector + Paypal, ended up doing the right thing

Alright
so i received an envelope like a week ago telling me to pay for my Paypal account that has a negative balance. The thing is the account is closed, so i am not sure how it has a negative balance. :P

So i ignored it, today i get a call early in the morning asking for me (a family member picks up) and they do not tell the family member anything. So then i called, and then they basically told me the same thing on the envelope.

"So I told her I do not owe paypal anything and to close a paypal account it has to have a positive balance or zero balance". And she is like "call paypal to fix the misunderstanding". I replied "I am not calling paypal, because they are not the ones annoying me, so i would like you to prove it before i pay anything". Then she responds check your paypal, "im like my paypal account is closed..." Anyways she got upset and told me "this is DEBT COLLECTION, PAY YOUR DEBT" and "GROW UP" and hangs up the phone. This conversation was like 30 seconds long lol.

Im just like "wtf just happened lol"

First time experience with a debt collector,
:P

Anyways im ignoring them, i am not paying anything. IF they call again i going to block their number.

If you owe paypal money, even though the account is closed people can still opt for charge backs and if ebay or paypal deliver these cash refunds it comes from you, they will eventually get their money. I had a similar thing where I owed £159.99 to paypal and i just left it, they eventually got court cases written up and obviously in their terms and cons they have things mentioning about charge backs etc and we are responsible, best thing to do it just pay it and forget about - else it will be playing on your mind.

@Darwin, debt in your own name CAN go on to affect your credit rating. If they know it's you, I would consider it a semi-major problem (yet another reason to go stealth). I have had stealth accounts hit with the same issue as you - those ones I stopped responding to.

Not the best attitude of trying to "fk" services over - but all the best. At least you have a better grasp on things - many point: avoid using real info.
