Since when do banks look at your credit score when opening accounts?

I have a good relationship with BOA. I've opened and closed TONS of accounts with them. Chase has been ok. I was doing well opening and closing with them, then things stopped. For some reason, I tried to open an account online one day and was declined. I only had 3 other accounts opened with them at the time. The message online said it was because of a trans union credit report. They didn't mention chexsystems and I'm not in there anyway. Also, Ally denied me an account when I tried to open it online, saying that I didn't "score high enough." Not sure what that means. BOA seems cool with me though, and allows me to keep opening and closing accounts without a problem. Anyone else have this issue? Why would a bank look at someone's credit report? I thought they only looked at chexsystems and that's it?

ING did the same for me a few weeks ago. I have a credit report notification thingy and they let me know that ING did a credit check on me.

Some major banks do credit checks to see what kind of risk you may be to the bank. I know that Wells Fargo does credit checks. I don't think most banks do the Chexsystems thing anymore.

If you have a 400 credit score a bank that looks at your credit will not give you a account. They view you as a high risk. Even Paypal won't give you a debit card without checking your credit. There is a reason why they want to know what they are getting themselves into.

I was able to get one at Wachovia which I believe now is Wells Fargo and, I only have a 491 credit score lol. Maybe my credit was higher when I opened it. I believe about a year ago but, I didnt have a good credit score then either lol.

What about a free checking account? I think Wachovia offers those still because I have one.
