Please help.. what card starts with 515151

me and my sister have gotten 5 cashiers checks in the mail today she got 1.. all for the amount of 500 or 100 no change. it is from chase bank. they said it is because of transaction that didn't post to my account because it was closed. it says its from a card starting with 515151.. im a little concerned about this because i dont know if i was really owed or not! i called chase and they said it is valid checks

rsot 08-09-2010 12:04 PM

? Deposit and see if all good - what exactly are you concerned about?

You aren't doing any make-home-at-money stuff or you? WHAT NUMBER DID YOU CALL? I capitalize this because the number on the checks have been reported as being BOGUS in the past....you call and they say the check is still good.

Be careful with the internet scams.

nsm 08-09-2010 12:08 PM

im not doing any at home stuff, i called the number on the check and chase official number, they both say they are good, im worried because of the amounts, it seems a llittle strange for us to both get checks for the same amounts not one penny over

pod 08-09-2010 12:24 PM

Were you expecting money? Thats kind of important!

Do you know what they are for? You dont just get checks for nothing. If you were expecting money, fine. Go to your bank in person and deposit them. If you were not expecting money, ask yourself why someone would send you checks...

rsot 08-09-2010 12:24 PM

I would agree that's odd but best thing to do is go to chase branch directly and deposit or cash.

nsm 08-09-2010 12:29 PM

no i wasn't expecting money. i only use the cards for paypal and amazon once my paypal account is frozen or amazon is suspended i usually chunk the cards. so i don't know what the money could be for

pod 08-09-2010 12:33 PM

So you got a bunch of checks for $1000s of dollars and you just think its your lucky day?

What information did you give when you called? Your bank account number?

nsm 08-09-2010 12:41 PM

i gave everything to the chase official number, bank account name address and even ssn. i spoke to a supervisior he told me to take them to a local branch. which im going to do. i was just trying to find out what card it might have been from so they could possibly tell me where the deposits/ checks came from

pod 08-09-2010 12:42 PM

What official number?? They asked for your ssn??

Dude, I seriously think you just gave away the farm here

Man, CC companies used to send those out all the time, but have not seen any in the last few years.

They are considered cash advances on you card and are hit at a higher interest rate if you do not pay back in 25-30 days. Plus I think they was a small fee for using them.

Basically, it is the CC companies way of getting you into more debt.

Ahh, right. That too. Forgot about the "free" cash advances in the mail!

Much better than some scammer getting your info.

rsot 08-09-2010 02:21 PM

Wow I had forgotten about that - sneak cash advance.

nsm 08-09-2010 03:56 PM

just came from the bank it's a real cashiers check, not a prepaid. they checked everything out. and said that it is ok. but im still a little worried

nsm 08-09-2010 04:07 PM

do anyone know of any giftcards backed by chase

pod 08-09-2010 04:18 PM

Ok, step back a bit here. They say its a real cashiers check. But from who and for what?

You dont just get money in the mail for no reason.

nsm 08-09-2010 04:26 PM

that's what im trying to figure out, it said it was a deposit from a card that i closed but every number that i called and the people at chased called can not tell us who the deposit is from. they just say it's a card

Well, its a lot of money and if you dont know where its from or what its for, that's just plain bizarre. My 1st reaction is some kind of scam. But what kind of scam gives you a ton of cash....

You wouldn't have had that kind of money on a prepaid card you forgot about I have to assume, so I'm just as stumped as you are.

hamoudy339 08-09-2010 04:35 PM

Have you ever had a Military Star Card?

nsm 08-09-2010 07:57 PM

nope. never had that card before

My suggestion would be to go to a Chase Bank branch and ask to speak with a manager. Tell him/her what you told us. Let them know that you are somewhat suspicious, but that the money COULD be owed to you, that you are unsure. Tell them that you just want to make sure this is not a scam and that you are not doing anything illegal by cashing them.

That way, if they turn out to be bogus checks, you were honest and upfront with them about it, so they will not suspect you of trying to scam them.

You can call a number, but they have no way of telling if the check is counterfeit or not by phone.

The bank manager may want a couple of days to investigate the matter. If they say it is real, then cash them. If it turns out they are counterfeit, or some type of scam, at least you are protected and know that you did the right thing.

i went to the chase branch yesterday and today.. i talked to several people including the vice president/manager... they ALL say that it's a real check. chase have gotten their money. thank you everyone for your input so far
