Both coin and token usually used as synonyms and consider similar, But they are entirely different from each other.

Coins and tokens  are two different kinds of units created using cryptography named cryptocurrency.

Coins -
Coins which are also known as altcoins, or alternative cryptocurrency coins are digital money, created using encryption techniques which store value, and it is digitally equivalent of money.

Token -
Tokens are digital assets, issued by the project, which can use as a method for payment inside projects ecosystem, similar functions with coins, but the main difference is that it also gives the holder a right to participate in the network.

Id compare tokens to shares in a company. Makes sense since theyre gained by participating in an ICO.

very well explained. Thanks!
I would also add that a token is a kind of coin with larger functionality. They may deliver more values to investors or any stakeholders. For example, Token might be used to hold votes by community on business-driving or technical decisions.
Also it's important to note that Coins (or Altcoins) are in majority alternative to Bitcoin and operate mainly under the BlockChain (except few ones like Ethereum, Ripple, Next, Omni).
Tokens in opposite require another platform such as Ethereum or Omni to operate and are created over ain ICO (Initial Coin Offering). As Investor of a Project, you can acquire prior to the launch tokens in exchange for cryptocurrency.

Coins are digital money that uses their own blockchains. Tokens, on the contrary, are digital assets that use already existing platforms. The coins serves like bases for tokens, but the functionality of tokens are wider. They can be used as a share of company possession or as a real estate item. Tokens also give the owner different practical functions, like a voting right.
