One in Five Crypto Wallets Flagged for Elevated Risk, New Study Shows
A new analysis from blockchain risk monitoring platform AMLSol.live has revealed that approximately 20% of all cryptocurrency wallets exhibit elevated risk characteristics in their transaction patterns. The findings highlight the scale of compliance challenges facing the crypto industry, with one out of every five wallets flagged for potential exposure to illicit or high-risk activity.
The research draws on data from blockchain analytics and aligns with patterns observed in official studies, such as those by Japan's Financial Services Agency, which show that a significant proportion of transactions involving unhosted wallets are classified as high-risk—in some cases exceeding 96% for outgoing transfers. The same studies indicate that high-risk addresses are disproportionately concentrated among unhosted wallets and certain VASP categories, with some major platforms reporting that over 68% of incoming transactions are associated with elevated risk.
AMLSol.live's methodology incorporates multiple risk indicators, including the absence of robust Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures, direct connections to known malicious addresses (such as those linked to fraud, extortion, or ransomware), and exposure to mixing services or darknet markets. An entity is deemed high-risk when it demonstrates a high exposure to such services, operates in a jurisdiction with weak AML/CFT measures, or lacks proper licensing.
The findings underscore the difficulty of identifying account holders behind risky wallets, with data showing that over 97% of addresses associated with stolen funds could not be linked to a known account name. "This poses a significant problem for compliance teams," a spokesperson for AMLSol.live noted. "With one in five wallets presenting a red flag, the volume of alerts is a major operational burden. However, it also makes the case for better data sharing and more effective screening tools to prevent illicit finance without alienating legitimate users."
The report calls for greater collaboration between the public and private sectors and urges wallet providers to enhance security measures, including real-time address screening. It also points to the growing pressure on non-custodial wallet services to implement stricter KYC procedures as regulators worldwide intensify their focus on the crypto ecosystem.
