Does anyone keep inventory in a storage unit?

Hey all was just wondering if anyone of you guys keep your inventory in a storage unit?
I just moved in with some new roommates and was thinking of operating my business in one of those units and just do all my packing there?
Is that even possible or is there anything else I can do because I sometimes have quite a truck load of items and it takes up a lot of space.

I use a storage unit but not for inventory - I use it for storing excess house stuff. I definitely say it's a nice service to have if you have a lot to fill up. Think it will cost about 40+ a month on average depending on size.

I looked into that years ago and nearly all of them that I checked wont allow you to do a business out of them. Not sure if its insurance or what but they wont allow it. You can store stuff there but to use it for packaging, etc you cannot. atleast when I checked it that is.

I checked around and ended up just building a 60-80 steel building with office on a cheap piece of land. That monthly mortgage is way cheaper than rent would be on a similar business location. Plus the depreciation and write offs are a huge help.

I did use a storage shed for about 2 years when I was selling a different, larger style of item.
I would do my paperwork at home then drive to the shed everyday.
I would package all my sold items and then take the packages to the Post Office.

Worked just fine, I am just happy that I do not have to do it that way any longer.

I like people who put their items in storage units and when they dont pay I get all their stuff and re sell it on ebay.

Sorry, Storage Wars is one of my fav shows and I just had to toss that into the thread.

I would hate to be one of those people who lost their stuff.

If you need a storage unit for your personal items, you may want to rethink your needs and wants in life. If you need a storage unit for selling items, then you also may want to reconsider, figuring the cost of the unit per year, to profit and sales. If you are this serious you may want to figure out alternative options.

I like it when people don't pay their business loans off and I buy their business stuff at auction, Vegas has tons of these small auctions every week. But I will look into storage auctions.

I had no choice but to rent a small 10x5 storage unit. I asked the onsite manager if I can box things up for a small business inside the unit. The manager said no because their insurance does not allow it. If there is a fire, the insurance will have to pay out more for any deaths.

I guess I haven't been paying attention to the manager. I box up my things at the storage unit. The labels get printed at home, all I do is slap it on the boxes or envelopes and off to the post office I drive. I am happy I still have my old hatchback from my college days, the car refuses to die.

Does this require a photo id or can you pay cash monthly?

I do. And simply packing stuff up isn't doing business out of your unit. Doing business means the exchange of currency. Simply bringing shipping labels with you and packing up boxes is, well, what people usually do at storage units, minus the whole shipping label part.

Yes, have bought a few.

The problem is when you buy the storage full you have to clean out everything and in most cases you get their junk or trash along with the treasures.

Did get one shed that had several Atari 7800's in a large box. Made some decent money as people love those old 7800's on ebay.

Ya never know what is going to be in the shed if you can handle other peoples Burger King bags half full of food.:eek::eek::eek:

The crap part of storage unit auctions is now they cost so much to win. locally there has been atleast a double price hike in sales.

bins that went for $300-500 now hit 1k very fast. Too many people seeing those high profits on those shows and think that will happen weekly for them.

Those shows show the highlights of their finds only. They dont show how many they lose their ass on.

Sandy D 10-29-2011 02:13 AM

A couple of the units I bought had some great stuff that I could see in them so I just eliminated most of the competition by starting the bid at 300.00.

That usually wipes out about 90% of those standing around.

With how unstable things are now adays, I do not keep ANY stock at all.. Time and time again I've been stuck with something for whatever reason and ended up using it myself. Oops.

I only order from my suppliers when I have a legit order and/or interest. I just save my paperwork and go with the flow, but I would not recommend being stuck with anything if it's possible at this point. Saves a ton of headache.

I would honestly look into storing someone else's junk though.. :P

Sandy D 05-17-2012 02:47 PM

I just added another storage unit.

Cannot pass on the great buys out there right now.

Not always going to be there so I am buying everything in site.

I am getting a better deal as I talked them into a lower price because of multiple units.

I want to follow Sandy around for a week... Must be one heck of a ride... :spy:

yotano211 05-23-2012 08:25 AM

I will pay her to follow her around. She should put that on ebay auction. "Follow me around for a day".

audiosoft 05-23-2012 05:21 PM

Yes, storage units is a good service. There are even companies that offer storage + shipment services for a cost. If you can afford to have a seperate place for your stocks that'll be better though.
