Buying certain items vs buying a pallet?

I am in the process of trying to figure out what items I should buy for wholesale. For someone just starting out would it be better to buy a pallet or buy certain items to resell? Also I have found that some websites require you to have a resell permit in order to buy some wholesale items. For those who have this how do you run a business without ebay finding out?

=> If you are just starting out, I'd buy a few items to test the waters with.
don't take the chance and get stuck with dead inventory.

==> What do you mean by eBay finding out? Finding out what?
If you have a resell permit and you can get the goods from the wholesaler and you are selling it on eBay, unless you advertise your site, how would they find out?

Make sure you get a sample to check quality before getting a whole pallet

Why would you buy a pallet if you have no idea of the quality of the goods or if you are even going to be able to onsell them anywhere?

Think of what capital you have to spend ( or not spend), then use it wisely.
Be careful with MOQ
As for ebay finding out and being a business, you would need invoices in any case.

Was that the angle you meant?

I agree with GB.. you should really earn trust with the supplier first before ordering a whole pallet, you could get something you dont expect.

You also do need to see what the market is like with your products and yes you will still have to pay customs regardless..

I would buy a small amount first, from the company you are thinking of buying the pallet from. If they only sell by the pallet, ask for some samples. The last think you want is crappy merchandise. Also, I would stay away from electronics returns.

You can never be totally certain a specific item will sell, but you can use TeraPeak to get a good idea of sales volume for sub-categories. You can also do keyword searches. For example, if you were selling, say, CATNIP, then you would want to search for CATNIP and then see what is listed and break it down from there - ie. "bulk catnip" or "catnip mouse" or "Cosmic Catnip" etc. That will give you an idea if there is a market for what you want to sell.

At the end of the day, though, you are taking a risk. It should be an EDUCATED risk.

Thanks guys! I started using Terapeak and it has helped a lot. I also learned that I should look for wholesales that have a manifest which seems to help a lot. It seems the ones who don't you have a higher risk.

A manifest? What's that?

It's a list that tells you the exact contents of the pallet or load.
