Can ebay send adverts through ip address
 

Hi,

I run a couple of stealth accounts which are fine and have been on the go for 4 years.

On my laptop I used my personal windows (no ebay account on this profile) to look at an item on ebay (nothing related to what I sell).
The next day my brother who lives with me said he was now getting ads and email for what I was looking at on his MacBook.

Is this possible through ip address to do this because it is the only way we are linked (my personal windows user acc uses the home internet provider)

My know my stealths are not in danger but I'm worried about how they do this.

Your metadata, I believe its specifically your cookies, lets say you're looking at holidays.. You may see adverts targeting holidays, its the same across a bunch of sites. Now lets say you clear your cookies, those adverts may stop being targeted at you HOWEVER I believe that if you're logged into a google account its saved, if you read through their TOS this may be a clause you agree to.

Its been like this for a while, why waste money on advertising women's shoes to a male whos browsing the internet to buy a new laptop. Of course people who have paid for adverts within that genre will target you for a higher conversion ratio.

Facebook are really bad for it as well.

What worry's me is, how is your brother getting adverts for **** you was looking at if he is using a completely different computer? Please be more clear, was you using your brothers computer? Is your brother logged into your eBay? Is your brother logged into your gmail/google account?

This is one of the many strategies used by ad platforms.

They will capture your IP address when your browsing products, and then relay those products via ads to all devices under the same IP address.

Had you been on different IP addresses, there would not have been any link since your on your own devices, so such ads would not have appeared.

P.S. There is nothing you did that would compromise your stealth accounts, so nothing to worry about there.

It's pretty creepy sometimes, I've got to say, I've seen this too.

But this alone won't create you a problem.

Keep in mind, though, that if your brother or whoever else uses your IP pounds the pooch on EB or PP, you're going to get banned as well, better to use a different IP and user account for business matters.

Thanks for the replys guys, I have done some further testing and it is the ip address linking us through the ad,s on various websites so nothing to worry about stealth wise but very creepy though :spy:
