You register at the IRS for free.

It doesn't get any cheaper than that.

That being said, OP would still need to pony up a couple bucks for the DBA, would he not? I remember mine cost about $35 to file for the sole proprietorship (LLCs are about 200 and INCs are about 125). Or is there another entity type I'm unaware of? (I've heard of "individual" businesses but always assumed these were the same cost as DBA's)

if you paid, it wasn't the IRS website. Also, remember that getting the EIN is not the end of it. You must file tax returns or eventually IRS will want to know why you got paid on that EIN and no taxes were filed. The state may also want to know because most of them share data with IRS.

The IRS does it for free, if you paid you got suckered by one of those sites that pretend to look like a government site and charge you a fee for doing something you should have done yourself.

I agree with the others who say you got suckered. I've used IRS.gov to get 4 EIN's in my life and it's never cost me anything. Getting an EIN is free unless the IRS has changed something in 2017. Registering your business with a state once you have an EIN involves spending money.

Easy way to tell if you've been suckered: did you get your EIN immediately after submitting the application? On IRS.gov you get your EIN right after you apply. If you're having to wait for your EIN then whoever you paid is going to complete the IRS.gov application for you and then send you the EIN the IRS gives them.

Then you didn't get your EIN on irs.gov and you just gave some scammer your name, address, and social security #......

I'd go ahead and sign up for Life Lock before your identity get's stolen....their insurance is a million bucks I think and you're going to need it! :rip:

Not only did you give some scammer your vitals including SSN, DOB, Name, etc, you PAID them $129 to let you give it to them.

Any why would you ask for advice, get good advice, and then ignore it and do something else?

We probably should stop ragging on the op, we all make mistakes. Consider it a lesson learned.

Next time if you have doubts come back and ask again before spending the money.

It was straight off the IRS website and I planned on filing taxes. Could you provide the link to free EIN?
