Responding to eBay messages through gmail

Hello all!

It is my understanding that when sending an email (in general), that your IP is also sent/embedded in that email. Assuming that is correct...

ISSUE: I am wanting to respond to messages on my stealth eBay via my gmail on my phone

QUESTION: If sending this way, and since my cell phone IP is constantly changing (when powered off, put in airplane mode, etc), do I have this or anything else to worry about?

Thanks!

No, nothing to worry about. Respond away. Gmail messages are re-routed through Gmail servers.

Read towards the bottom here:

Since every packet is re-routed you're never exposing any IP's to eBay.

Thanks so much for the quick reply! That is EXACTLY what I needed to know.

Believe it or not, in trying to find an answer to this, ironically I read the same article a few days ago...just not all the way to the end, ha! Makes a huge difference to finish reading an article (slapping forehead, Homer Simpson "Doh!)

Don't forget to disable pictures on your gmail accounts, though.

What would disabling pictures do/prevent?

They can get the IP of the person opening the image. Emails they send have trackers and they can link you.

Ahh yes I thought that might be the case. Thanks for confirming [emoji106]

Actually upon doing a bit of research I don't think they can get my IP since they go through Google's proxies, and since I'm using an iPhone. Not that I plan on opening the images anyway just to be extra safe. But here's what I found if it helps somebody else out (specifically for iPhone/iPad)

There's no reason to disable images when you're using Gmail. 100% of the email's data is re-routed through Google servers. If eBay sees any IP it would be that of a Google proxy.

Have you ever viewed the source of an Ebay email?

It's nothing but HTML and text...

Yep I though the same based on what I read. Thanks for confirming phaz0rz [emoji106]

Re: Responding to eBay messages through gmail

I always thought it had to do with embedded beacons in the gifs and images, not the IP.

For example, I used to embed the little picture/code to tell me if somebody opened my email to them, it doesn't matter if it went through the gmail servers or not, I still get the notification, along with a lot of other data.

Personally I like to just reply through eBay directly and be a little bit inconvenient, but have a peace of mind.

It may be ok now, but what about in the future? I don't want to be the first to find out something has changed and it cost me my account
