Ban over exploitation

I'm just curious if eBay would ban over exploiting the new virus outbreak? I read that Amazon was banning people over selling protective gear.

I thought this market would be way too radical to even consider. I have been scanning both platforms at the massive uptick in products surrounding the virus.

I got that email from ebay.It seems crazy they would ban sellers just because their price is high.

Re: Ban over exploitation

There has been two updates from eBay in the past week about this. As of yesterday, they've outright banned the listing of masks (N95 or surgical type), hand sanitizer, and disinfectant wipes. It seems pretty ridiculous to me considering that tons of people have a legitimate need for those types of items with covid-19 breaking out, but I guess that is the stance eBay has decided to take as more and more sellers were trying to scalp and turn a big profit from a bad situation.

The first update from eBay was warning sellers against charging above market value for covid-19 related items. (this is communism, by the way, and totally goes against the free market system we claim to be a part of)

https://i.postimg.cc/7hS4BQ4s/223.png
(eBay link - https://community.ebay.com/t5/Announ.../ba-p/30716958)

Then the latest update just says those items are no longer allowed to be offered at all:
https://i.postimg.cc/fLGZfQGS/35.png
(eBay link - https://community.ebay.com/t5/Announ.../ba-p/30734312)

In short, no more free market. We can no longer attempt to profit from these totally legal and freely accessible items.

And to think I was about to pull the trigger on an order of 1k N95 masks, literally 5 days ago.

I paid a nice sum for hand sanitizer to resell. I wasn't price gouging the buyers. I started each auction at .99. The bidders ran price up. I listed buy it nows as well. Not one of the buy it nows sold but every auction I listed went for twice the amount my buy it now price was.

It sucks with no warning basically that these listing were going to be removed. When I purchased my qty we were able to list them and no restrictions for the product except to not mention virus etc in listing. I did not use any words or make any claims about the hand sanitizers. Today I search Hand sanitizer and there are still thousands.
How did ebay determine whom to remove listing for? Mine were listed as allowed. The ones still there are listed as they would of been allowed but why are there so many still there? Are they removing reported listings, picking and choosing who can and can't sell the item? The email stated not to list them and all would be removed and it's evident that this is not the case. There a brand new listings just from today.

I also realize this is a health thing and buyers being taken advantage of but not all eBay sellers take advantage of buyers. And now many sellers are currently stuck with a large lot of product that when purchased they were able to list them. I am able to sell my stock elsewhere, but others may not have that option. It's not like eBay cares about sellers losing money due to the removal of listings. eBay loses money on the sales and now ebay in my opinion is possibly keeping people not be able to have hand sanitizer if needed or wanted. Businesses in my area have zero sanitizers at this time, and they are not sure when more will be in stock. Some people shop only online and not physically go out and purchase these items. eBay has removed these peoples choices to purchase sanitizer on the eBay platform.

So you guys get my point. eBay don't care and I believe eBay has made it harder for buyers to purchase sanitizer during the concern over this new virus and illness. Protecting themselves from this virus just got harder

Re: Ban over exploitation

ebay : Hey guys! So, people are being charged too much for masks and stuff. So, I have an idea how to help protect them. Lets prevent them from buying it, at ANY price.

Re: Ban over exploitation

Best time was about a month ago. CNN couldn't help themselves hyping up the hysteria. It's distasteful, but profiting an extra 15-30 bucks on a mask wouldn't exactly turn someone's pockets out.

$40 mask or death. Hmm...

I just came back from Kroger,it is a mad house, everyone is buying, toilet paper.paper towel, hand sanitizer ,chlorine, bleach, many empty shelves and notes saying they are limiting purchase to no more than 5.

Re: Ban over exploitation

I still don't understand why there are over 4000 listings right now on eBay for hand sanitizer.

Makes me mad mine aren't there.

Oh well. At this point nothing I can do about it.

They are banning EVERY listing. Not just some. To prevent price gouging.

I work at a hospital and people were stealing boxes of masks at the entrance probably to sell on ebay. We now have to hand one mask per patient when they come in.

The sad part of all of this is the fact the virus is a lesser killer than influenza. But everyone drinks the Kool-aid and listens to news outlets. I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but it really amazes me how certain stories are blown up in the news within the last few years of social media.

what these morons don't understand about price gouging, is supply and demand. They don't understand capitalism. The only time price gouging might be bad, is if you're the only one, with something that means life or death for others. But if you allow price gouging, you will introduce competition. I'm in Florida. We have hurricanes, and supplies run out quick. Want to know what would prevent that? Price gouging. Make it worth while for people to go out of their way to bring supplies in to be sold. Don't allow price gouging, to protect people from being price gouged, and you just prevent them from being able to buy that thing, even if they COULD and wanted to afford the price.

The problem is, it spreads a bit faster, and is MORE likely to kill. It's worth than the flu. How much worse? I'm not smart enough to answer that. But it is worse. But yes, people barely bat an eye at the 30-40k annual US deaths, but 1 death in California, and OMG, it's the end of the world, state of emergency time!

Definitely, reselling masks if anything is connecting buyers with a product they otherwise might have had trouble locating.

Won't argue with ya! I was sourcing masks from home improvement websites, marine websites, medical depot websites, even got some from a sole veteran-owned supply store  Guy was awesome.

Figure they might have otherwise sat on the shelf in the store, but with the internet were able to be shipped to CA, NY, FL, TX

That is incorrect. The death rate from the Flu is 0.1%.
March 3, the World Health Organization said the global mortality rate of the
Coronavirus was 3.4%

Yes, but the flu kills and has killed a HELL of a lot more people. I think that's what they meant. It kills 40-80K a year in America. Cali has one death, and they declare a state of emergency.

As far as the 3.4% number. Yeah, that's complete garbage. The amount of people that got this, and had no idea, or weren't tested at all, is probably staggering. For many, it's barley a mild cold. America has tested a few thousand people. So sure, if 10 die but only 1000 were tested, you magically have 10% rate. America currently has the second highest rate. That 3.4% number is based entirely on a complete lack of information, and we might not ever actually know the real number. But I promise, whatever number they give, will always be an over estimation.
