Question for US sellers on eBay.com
 

Do you include the sales tax in your item's price? For example:


I list an item on eBay.de for 20$, 19% sales tax is already included in that price and I just transfer that sales tax to the German government on monthly basis.


Is this the case on eBay.com for US-based sellers? Or does the sales tax get added to the check-out amount?


I am asking because I need to know how to price my items on eBay.com should I decide to sell there.

Sales tax is automatically added by eBay during checkout without any action taken by the seller. The sales tax amount varies from state to state and it goes by where the buyer lives.

If I list my item for sale on eBay.com for 100$ and the buyer is in IN where sales tax is 7%, will the 7% be deducted from the 100$ price or will the buyer end up paying 107$?


I am not yet quite sure how the sales tax in the US works, it seems that you guys are used to seeing the pre-tax price of things?!

I would be royally pissed off if the price went up by 7% upon checking out!


Is this also the case on Amazon.com, Walmart...etc?

Yes, we're used to seeing the pre-tax price. And yes, the others are right - the tax is just unexpectedly tacked on at the end. But the thing is, this is USA and the people here are used to having random taxes applied without notice during the last part of the transaction. It's nothing new and I've yet to have a buyer complain about it.

Sad situation, really.. :s

That's precisely why I think it's actually a plus that eBay is collecting sales tax.. It makes it a lot easier to file state sales tax returns if eBay is proactively collecting sales tax without asking for state tax account numbers, etc.

I wish we had your sales tax system in Germany, it seems very convenient for sellers, but a bit bugging to buyers.

You guys have to set your own taxes when selling? It's not automatic?

If I list an item for sale in Germany and ask for 100 Euros, the government then taxes that 100 Euro I took from the customer at 19%.

Customers only see one price in Germany where the standardized VAT tax is already included.

Sellers must transfer the VAT they collect on monthly, quarterly or yearly basis (depends on your revenue).
