| | | Themav | 09-02-2020 09:32 AM | Fastest computer for switching between Users Guys,
My MacBook Pro of 7 years is super slow switching between users. I do the full log out of one user before going into another user rather than just switching between them using the menu on the top right corner.
Does anyone know what’s the quickest computer or what spec I’m looking for on a computer to make sure it’s super speedy when switching between users ... is it simply super high memory or cpu speed etc?
I have 10 accounts and losing about 9 mins per switch between users
In other words I’m looking at a new Computer but which one for multiple users without slowdown ? |
| Thromparsus | 09-02-2020 09:57 AM | Re: Fastest computer for switching between Users In my experience it's an SSD that makes the biggest difference to this type of performance. I use Windows 10 but any computer with an SSD and 8GB of RAM switches users very quickly.
CPU doesn't matter much and going beyond 8GB of RAM doesn't give any noticeable gains, for Windows at least. What's the spec of your MacBook? You could probably just get away with upgrading to an SSD and maybe upgrading the RAM. |
| Themav | 09-03-2020 11:07 AM | Re: Fastest computer for switching between Users Hey thanks for your help - am I going to get away with an external SDD or should I just bite the bulletin and go internal ? |
| phaz0rz | 09-03-2020 11:24 AM | Re: Fastest computer for switching between Users Internal would be ideal because computers can read from/write to internal drives much faster than they can external drives.
Have you considered virtual machines? You could speed up your operation significantly by moving all of your accounts into low-spec virtual machines. |

Holy moly! I have a 5-6 year old PC build, with an SSD. And out of curiosity, I logged out of this user session, into another user account, then back out of that and into this one again, in a hair under a minute.
An upgrade is definitely in order for you lol |

You don't have to that way.
You can simply have in one user profile, many folders of Firefox or Chrome Portable. However you must be careful when switching from one browser to the other (I mean make sure to change IP properly). It's exactly the same you will be doing by changing the user. |
| JamieStars | 09-04-2020 07:42 AM | Re: Fastest computer for switching between Users I recently upgraded my 2012 iMac to an SSD and it's done wonders. Hadn't used it for a year so I would highly recommend. |

I find macs to be the fastest still. Or you can buy a cheap windows computer with an SSD.
I'm surprised your 7 year old mac is that slow... you must have been updating the OS and everything else everytime. |

If you can hold out till next year I know Mac pro will come out with a custom chip and redesign that the time I plan to upgrade. |

It’s important to invest in good hardware. Fast switches to different accounts adds minutes imo. No setup is bad unless your window freezes or you lose data. It’s like mining for bitcoins lol. |

A simple SSD upgrade is almost certainly all that is needed in this case; no need to throw the whole thing away or put it to the side. Quote:

If it's a SATA SSD, just open the laptop and connect the SSD to the internal SATA power/data connectors and you're done as far as the hardware installation goes. However, you will need to get your OS on to the new drive; you can either clone your current installation to the SSD or install a fresh copy of the OS. |

Regards | There are 240 GB drives for under £25 now. It's insane how cheap they are compared to not very long ago. |

Nice :) price keeps dropping on the ssd relatively speaking |

lol, this is my setup too. Just beef up the RAM and upgrade to SSD on an old Windows 7 laptop (or a mac of that era), and that's all you really need. Then install VMware or start using the browser profile method on one user account on your laptop, and you're able to switch between accounts in seconds.
Using OS user profiles is so 2005. :heh: |

This... this is a great alternative.
I'm going to switch to this method while I have their residential IP.
I'm still running user accounts and even separate computers |

I would say 90% of user profile space is wasted on useless content that belongs to the OS. |

Similar fingerprints have never been a problem. In real situation, many computers in the world are very similar. "Unique" machines aren't good for forensics analysis. |
