ebay position on damaged returns

Hello,

Anyone ever got success appealing damaged items returned, as a seller? It seems that anyone can buy things from ebay, destroy them, send back and still get a full refund. Or this is just useless, and better to write off rather than argue with ebay?

I was told it was the cost of doing business on eBay, I write it off. In very rare cases when you report the buyer they may refund you if the buyer has had previous bad reports. If you are a top rated seller you can refund 50% less and risk a case opened against you.

Oh well, it seems that doing stealth is also aimed to protect from such persons. As that is a complete nonsense - send back trash and get refunded!

what do you mean by "risk a case". You say that like it's a bad thing.

Unfortunately there's nothing you can do.

I'd say most of the buyers are good buyers, so as long as your gains are much higher than your loses, you should accept this

You might get ebay to help you once a year, but that's pretty much it. There is nothing to appeal tho, unless they straight up admit to destroying the item. And even then, sometimes not

These are normal business costs and there is no way to control absolutely everything. But direct evidence worked.

Its down to your account ebay does allow to take money deducted depending on condition of return for example seller can take 10 to 20% for used items 30% parts missing etc

Its all down to your account you get option while you click on issue refund on return case

Re: ebay position on damaged returns

I managed to talk to the eBay supervisor. She said that they can't help because they don't know the original condition of the item before posting. I pointed out that just by a common sense it is logical, that if the item of such a value is pictured as in an absolutely pristine visual condition is delivered in different condition - it would be returned instantly, not in 2 months, but this was ignored twice during the conversation.

So, the bottom line is - there is no any protection against it. eBay is only for buyers. They do not check anything about returns. The only thong they check - if there were previous similar returns on the buyer's account. But if it is clean - buyer can do whatever he wants, and eBay will side with him.

EBay has no way to tell who is telling the truth, pictures can be doctored,if it is an expensive item, you can offer to pay for insurance.

You missed their point. If the item the OP received was THAT off from the picturing in the listing, they would have opened a return right away, not in 60 days. OP's logic makes perfect sense. Ebay doesn't care about logic tho.

Re: ebay position on damaged returns

it is not 'logic' that people return an item sooner than later.
It is just most folks in a certain culture, society would do act A rather than act B ,some on this forum said Japanese do not return what they bought,I CANT speak for the Japanese in Japan, but where I grow up,most customers paid cash and buy from a brick and mortar store and have a chance to examine the item before purchase, but it does not mean it is always item as described (like it is not real leather,or its color faded, fabric shrinks) or it is a knockoff,(Rolex watch, plenty of those out there) and most retail stores are privately owned and owners refused to accept return .
Since the customer paid with cash, there is no chargeback .
Some would get into an argument and get physical and police is involved, the retailer would then refund as it is poor publicity and would hurt his business.
BTW,Ebay MBG is only 30 days, what is the item and why is EBAY involved,it should be either Paypal or the cc issuer?

Again, you've missed the point and retorted with a false equivalence fallacy, which is ironic considering we are discussing logic.

All of the examples you mentioned, are reasons why someone WOULD take 60 to open a return. The OP's issue is that the buyer is claiming the item ARRIVED destroyed. And at no point in the last two months, did they even bother to send a message saying " hey, the thing you sent me is nowhere near the perfect item you sold". If you went to a brick and mortar, and paid cash, and they handed you a broken item, I highly doubt even the Japanese would go home for 2 months, and then complain.

Like the others said,it is the cost of doing business on Ebay or any sales venue or even your own website,if you accept paypal or credit card,180 days is the rule.
if Ebay sides with you,he would turn t o his cc issuer and file a chargeback, claiming he has returned the item and you refused to refund.
You would lose and pay $20 chargeback fee.
The only time I have seen the retailer wins a case of chargeback is when he has his own merchant account and he is Walmart,Home Depot,Bestbuy ,Macy and the like.

You are just speculating people would do this and not do that, the fact is OP lost the case, the case is closed.
I can also argue I travel for business, not home to open /examine the content, then you said why 60 days?where did you go and why buy something if you take 60 days to examine the package(based on your LOGIC).
well,it is none of your business where I go and why I take 60 days to examine the content, the fact is I can file INAD or chargeback in 180 days.
Or I can say someone in the family put it away and I cant find it until now,or I am too busy to look,or I was hospitalised for 59 days or I am too depressed to bother,Or I cant pay my credit card bills as I just recently lost my job ,Or I ruined it and now I want my money back.
that 180 days trump any so called 'logical behavior'

Re: ebay position on damaged returns

Dont sell anything you cant afford to lose-EBAY MOTTO,paste it by your pc.
same can apply to your own website,AMZN,ETSY,Bonanza,Ecrater.
Some have lost a lot more,a $24k antique watch ,buyer returned an empty box,the seller is a store in business for many years, when Fed Exp delivered the package, they noticed the weight is less,so they called the police and open the box ,filed a police report .
Ebay gave them 3 days to refund, else it will do it .
The police saw the box,and a report is filed, this aint logic, this is actual fact and seller still lose the case

Of course it's my ****ing business! 60 days to open a return claiming you received it destroyed, IS ****EN INSANE. Your excuses are just that. BULL****.

By the way. Those last two excuses, that you lost your job, or you ruined it, ARE LITERALLY THE THING WE ARE TALKING ABOUT. Those are the ****ty buyers we do not want. And just because YOU are ok with ****ty buyers, doesn't mean WE should be. Buyer claiming he received a broken item 1-2 months ago, is logically flawed from the start. But sure, keep making excuses for them. We all know these are scamming buyers, and in the OP's case, it actually was a scamming buyer. And you're literally trying to make excuses for someone scamming him.

SO what the **** is your point? Ebay is a scummy company, we all already know that. And you come on here and tell us we can't complain about it. ok. :violin:
I really don't understand how you have nothing better to do than this. You're not a stealth seller. Hell, you barely sell anything at all. Why are you on here.
