User account or virtual machine?
 

Is creating a separate user account enough or should I get something like VMWare?

If you have a computer with sufficient memory, fast enough cpu, hard drive....VMWARE is the best way to go. On a personal level, I work on many different things at once, and having to switch to another account is a pain. Plus, VMWare keeps it all separate and it should minimize human error.

I like vmware, i am not a big fan of running the windows 7 small install that i did previously when i did vmware. User accounts always worked for me... Then i learned about profiles, and that has worked well. But, google gets suspect about new browsers on the same pc, after 3-4 they start asking for phone # during creation of gmail. That tells me, it's time to switch pcs or user accounts.

I use browser profiles under one user account. Successful heavy-weights are moved to well-prepped VM.
Someday, eBay is going to go the way of Amazon. I don't want successful accounts to be sitting ducks.

Very good points and smart. If google can detect user profiles, then ebay and Paypal aren't far behind. I feel they can at least, it's sorta weird on a new pc... why all of a sudden google doesn't ask for a phone # to create an account. But on the browser user profile.. with similar IP pools, do. I think ebay and Paypal aren't far behind. I experienced something weird on both ends a month or so ago.

Both will work, it depends on your preference. Some believe VMs are more secure as you can change more settings and some believe in User IDs as it looks more natural

I prefer user accounts. I'm afraid eb have sophisticated techniques to identify VM's.

eBay is checking for open port 443 which VMware uses when you log in and there is reports they are suspending accounts which they detect is using this. Also you can mask the port and again they are suspending accounts that they can not detect a open or closed port 443 as they also know stealth users on VMware will do this.

Been using 30 user accounts without a glitch on 1 PC for years and will continue to do so, Thanks to this forum.

For different user accounts, can ebay detect those are all from the same hardware via fingerprinting? And how do we keep all the cookie and files if we decide to switch computers?

I don't know if vMware is better but I found that slowing down and heating the pc ,I prefer user accounts
