ID Doc numbers - does ebay have a 'code checker' formula?

Passport or driving license...
You can't just make these numbers up.
There is a formula for making these numbers.
You can't just make up. The code is made up with a mix of date of birth and characters from your name.

I want to know... does ebay have any check formula to see if one of these numbers is a real one?

For example... credit cards... you can't just make up 16 numbers.
There is a formula. This formula is well known (not to me - but there are websites that (dodgy ones) that will generate numbers that are valid).

Or... is it only for driving licenses that there is a unique code?

Just wondering.

Thanks.

Credit card number tells you whether it is VISA,MC,DISCOVERY ETC plus more, the merchant accesses a data base which has most of these card numbers, and the card issuers update these cards ,this is how they know if the card is any good.
as for passport and driver license, they also have databases they can check.policeman can check your driver license from his car and customs officer at the airport taps into a passport data base.
Detectives also subscribe to these data bases, they can tell you if a person is out of the country or in jail.

Likely an algorithm formula at play to check validity - highly possible

most merchants will try to authorise the card, like a penny or $1 ,so if the card does not exist,it will fail, logic or no logic

OP would like to know if eBay or Paypal check Driver license / passport numbers against a data base rather than just eyeball a photo (shopped) you'd sent in, this is also something I'd like to know? lets not go off track talking about VCC because that's just obvious & common knowledge and has nothing to do with checking driver/passport numbers, it was just mentioned by OP as a comparison not a discussion point.

of course Ebay will check your driver license, passport by accessing the data bases ,else why bother to ask?
US customs officers check when you enter the country, policeman checks driver license when they stop you for possible traffic violation

Maybe maybe not, I'm not convinced, They could just ask for the numbers not an actual photo if that was the case.
Who has a real stealth driver license or passport? Nobody here I'd imagine.

Ebay always seem to be one step behind Amazon but do eventually get there. So if Amazon are anything to go by then yes, there is a chance that they use 'code checkers' because Amazon have been able to determine phake passport and Driving Licence numbers and, in the UK, phake UTR numbers too.

That's not to say they check them against a database, they merely ensure the number meets the correct format, check numbers etc.

Thanks for the replies guys.
ebay are extremely thick and dumb.
If there is an algorithm... then it will be known to certain parties who are in the business of making docs.

Checking against a DB - I somehow doubt this. But that's just my guess.

As to whether there is an algorithm or not... I guess someone who accesses the dark net could get some info about this? :)

My thoughts: there isn't an algorithm... else Paypal would have caught onto surely?

Disclaimer: all of the above is just for research purposes, if anyone gets in trouble discussing the subject, please speak to my lawyer and not me. :p
