Is Facebook marketplace the next big thing?

Hi everyone,

I would say around 5 or 6 years ago I sold things around my apartment I use to have on Facebook marketplace never saw Facebook marketplace as a potential business until this week.

My eBay account got another MC011 I had it last year and I got it again. I havnt tried to fix it this time I thought instead of waisting time with eBay I’ll try other marketplaces.

I listed on facebook accepted PayPal, cash on collection, bank transfer. To my amazement I was getting enquiries left right and centre messages all the time and I sold out what I had quicker than ebay. I had lots of cash, bank transfers and PayPal payments.

The prices are a little less than ebay but the profit is still their? My question is Facebook marketplace the next big thing? What bad things can happen on Facebook? Ie ebay mco11 drop shipping policy suspended account list goes on with eBay lol.

I appreciate all your replies.

Facebook is getting bigger - still feels like a lot more for locally-based sales (up here anyhow) for now

Yes I think so too I’ve also listed on gumtree and Shpock. My PayPal has now just been limited so had to supply invoice hopefully it will be alright. But the interest I’m getting on my stock is unreal messages everyday and because I’m willing to deliver the item myself customers trust my business. I can’t rely on eBay too much as things always happen I need to branch out and getting paid bank transfers and cash on collection is better then not being paid at all. (If anything happens to PayPal or eBay)

It’s nice meeting new people it’s like a business my old mates got where he goes to garages to buy cat converters or car batteries and then weigh them for money. It’s nice delivering an item and getting paid for it. Unfortunately I have no stock now so no money to be made :(

Facebook as in the Facebook.com? I doubt it. Not many people I know even use it anymore, looks like a dead platform like MySpace became.

Yeah Facebook.com 85 messages in 8 days for just one product I don’t get interest like that on eBay and these people want to buy desperate to buy but I can’t sell because I can’t keep up with the demand.

You have to live in big city so they pick it up if its something big. no one will drive to small towns to pick it up.

That's a relatively nice niche to have - high demand, low supply...seems like price geared for high profit

Be careful, make sure the payment is cash,do not accept Paypal or similar payment processor and meet in well lit public places.

Facebook take money from ads, if it really wanted to become it would have done it already a real marketplace

Facebook is huge. I would say the third largest platform in the USA.

Thanks everyone who has replied appreciate all the replies and some great advice given. I’ve noticed on Facebook I can potentially buy same items I’m selling for and up the price as well so might be worth giving that a go.

I sent my bank statement into eBay today for MC011 they wanted supplier invoices but I don’t have them so not optimistic my bank statement will be accepted but it’s not the end of the world if it doesn’t get accepted.

What about having different Facebook (user) accounts in the computer?. Do they check fingerprints like Amazon?. I wouldn't like to use my main account as I have lots of friends wouldn't like me to see selling. But neither lose my main old Facebook account for being linked to other (stealth) Facebook accounts selling some risky stuff ...

I wouldn't be surprised if they do check fingerprints...and more. Fb constantly monitors activity to ban users for ⊗⊗⊗⊗ info, bad info, negative posts, etc

All platforms soon will use Selfie Security. This is all part of the plan. But it wont work for long because economy will collapse and you will be lucky if you have electricity.

You don’t have to let your friends see what your selling on Facebook. None of my friends know what I’m selling. I excluded friends from seeing just because I want to keep my business and social life separate.

I'd say FB is good as a supplement platform compared to eBay

FB Marketplace has been a little secret I have been using for almost a year. Is it perfect? No. But if you understand the "trick" to sourcing products that catches their buyers and algo, you can make a nice paycheck on there. (you wont figure it out on PC platform).

The only negative is the random ban over "unusual activity" You can get the account restored, it is just a headache.

Also, expect persistent dumb questions from buyers that never read your ad. I average 30-50 questions a day just on about 5-10 items.

I sold Fire Rings on the marketplace last year. Great pictures, measuremnts etc.... literally thousands of messages a day asking where the item is and what size is it...
We simply stopped answering questions.

You should have an option when creating your listing to hide it from your friends.

Yup. Just a check of the box. Also, just make a new account for selling. No reason not to.

It is like ebay or amazon with way more dumb questions. Turn the commenting off helps but the more comments, the more sales sometimes. It takes a while to get your money. sometimes a couple weeks after delivery. Disputes are a nightmare but getting easier.

I never looked into Facebook marketplace, because I do not trust people. I don't care what anyone says. I don't care if it's the richest area, or poorest I will only "ship" to you. Now if someone can tell me how well they're doing when it comes to using shipping services I'd definitely look into it.

Re: Is Facebook marketplace the next big thing?

I get messages everyday but I don’t mind as if I wasn’t getting messages a day then I would be worried as if your not getting messages theirs no interest in your items. I don’t ship out internationally but occasionally will post the item by a delivery method but most of it is delivering the item myself.

At the moment for me it’s perfect it’s working and making money it’s so much more different to eBay and theirs no selling limits either payment can’t be held or anything like that.

Same as ebay or amazon. They pay, you ship. End of story unless you have a problem, just like any sale.

Shipping internationally is way too risky indeed based on loss acceptance

In what way risky? Is it something linked directly to facebook or just international shipping in general?

You don’t have to use Stripe as a payment method. I think when you start selling you need to create a stripe account and link it but you don’t have to use it. You get paid when someone collects the item or you deliver it. I accept cash and bank transfers upon collection or delivery and sometimes PayPal but mainly cash and bank transfers.

It doesn’t take a while to get your money if you use stripe then probably yes but if you accept cash or bank transfers it’s as soon as the item leaves your hands to another persons hands your then paid.

I noticed a lot since I started delivering the items myself I don’t get no refunds either no cases opened or whatever I use to get on eBay as long as product is on point customers appreciate you going to them and you just move on to the next one.

With the questions their pretty much all the same so my reply is pretty much the same lol

I dont even want to fathom those messages. haha I sell a VERY hot generic item that gets 70k clicks every 14 days. The question is always "is this so-and-so brand?" They NEVER look in detail at the pictures or read the description.
