Ebay accounted restricted - eBay wants VAT number
 

Hi guys, my account was just restricted because eBay asking for VAT number. My sales in the last 12 months is around £45000 which almost half the VAT threshold. I have contacted eBay and they say HMRC told them that our account should be VAT registered but we don't sell anywhere else. Does anyone know if there is a fix to this? Thanks

If HMRC requested your suspension from eBay, you must deal with HMRC, you must send an email requesting an explanation of the process that was opened to you.
In this case I understand that your account is from the UK and that it is secretive.
If so and she doesn't have much money stuck, let her die.

I am sure HMRC did not tell them anything , probably it was an ebay rep writing this message and they are known for providing false info

Yeah the account is registered in the UK. It's a legit account with real names and Limited company attached to it. I have had it for 4 years and no issues but suddenly they want VAT number. I know things have changed since January this year but surely they can't ask for VAT number if the turnover is way less than £85k. I read somewhere they said if any account has more than 30 orders and £1170 sales in a month then they have to be registered. Also somewhere else I read if an account listed more than £100,000 worth of items then they need to be VAT registered but it goes completely against what VAT is in the UK. Very strange.

in this case you can try a last attempt on the phone with customer support

if it does not work do a voluntary VAT registration , it bears some risks but also has advantages

eb agents are known to not always be aware of current issues and give falso info

too harsh , they have a limited company so vat registration is not an issue

Are you resident in the UK or operating from abroad via a Limited Company?

That would make you liable to register for VAT, you would not have the 85K allowance.

I ask this because regardless of what the agent told you HMRC did not inform eBay to change your account over to VAT registered, they would tell you direct and then expect you to inform eBay. Ebay have decided for themselves you should be, so what triggered it?

From what I understand they won't budge on this. You will need to get a letter from HMRC if they have made an error, register and then live with it or subsequently de-register to prove to them you are not required to do so.

But something will have to be done for sure or your account will be suspended.

non resident companies would not pass ebay verification so he has to be a resident , most likely ebay give less leeway to corporations so that he would not have a problem being a sole trader

So maybe we can think that the people inside eBay trying to sabotage the accounts?
I think this a lot, that internal people at eBay (not the eBay company) talk about people on some sites taking our money.

Depends on the age of the account, I do not know if what you're saying is currently the case but in the past it was acceptable. There are still agencies offering Limited Company backed eBay accounts for foreign nationals.

That said, they might be manipulating the residency information. It used to be a popular route for Pakistanis and Indians.

it is difficult to manipulate credit records and false entries in the companies house are likely a crime

Ebay can ask anything it wants,just like Paypal .
When Paypal starts asking for SSN,many refuse saying they dont trust Paypal or they dont sell much,but that's the way it is ,it is Paypal way or high way.
Also Ebay thinks you may sell 45K now,but soon it will be 85K ,it has seen it happens .
