Removing cash on pickup for local listings

Removing cash on pickup for local listings

Many sellers offer free collection in person, especially for large items which may be difficult to post. As we continue to make sure eBay is a safe and secure place to sell your items, we will be removing the option for buyers to pay with cash for items from 1 October. Instead, all payments for local items will go through the site - with a simple digital confirmation on collection - to ensure that you get paid securely and promptly by buyers.

WHAT THE **** IS THIS? No sane person would ever risk taking online payment with no system of valid proof in place should a buyer open up a case. This is an outward stealth assault on sellers, many of whom won't be aware of the colossal flaws waiting to **** them, all for the sake of $$$

What are you concerns about the digital confirmation? Do you even know how it works?

I'm pretty sure it means next to nothing and won't protect against "item not as described" cases or similar.

Exactly.

Credit card chargebacks.

Just eBay trying to find other revenue with everything else changing.

they want to take control of all funds , if it is expensive items that can not be shipped it is better not to sell them on ebay

Re: Removing cash on pickup for local listings

I will be continuing my existing routine of stating cash on collection only in the description and refunding anyone who attempts to pay online.
Will be interesting to see if ebay now applies penalties for doing so.

It is safer that way,how many buyers would carry thousand dollars of cash and I sure do not want to be seen counting those cash in the open and I do not want strangers to come into my house.
Not to mention there are plenty of counterfeit cash, money order, postal orders

How often are you needing to sell items for collection worth thousands?

So you don't know then. How will the lack of protection for 'not as described' differ for online sales? Indeed, it could be said it's better given you won't be forced to pay the buyers return postage.

I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill, particularly as you don't even know how it works.

There will be sanctions/penalties if you refund buyers and probably negs too. Anyway, it's your call.

How would it differ to those who make a chargebacks for online purchases?

It could remove your listings.
Some collections could be worth in the thousands, comics, precious metals, antique Tiffany studio lamps, machinery.
As to item not as described,I would think the buyer will examine the item before payment,if it does not work after he takes it home,he would want to return the item,no different than buying online and have it shipped by carrier.

Re: Removing cash on pickup for local listings

Never done a cash on collection sale and don't know the details of the digital confirmation system so not ideally positioned to comment on it's merits.

But as a counter argument, could it be said that there are as many unscrupulous sellers as there are buyers and ebay have had cash buyers complaining that they were conned and have no recourse again the seller apart from the courts.

I can see both sides are the argument, but as we all know buyers rights will always trump those of a seller and that's not just ebay. Some of the protection is government imposed statutory rights.

I was about to say the same, there must be enough bad cases to make Ebay takes notice .
if you the seller is bothered by the credit card fee, then mark up the item.
If any one cares,it is your state auditor!
