Sometimes they ask, sometimes they dont.

Depends on country, and maybe bad picture of the passport/id has triggered live selfie verification

In my experience, it is usually caused by some mismatching "country" information, eg opening a UK Payoneer but adding a US bank account or using a US phone number etc.

Don't use "anti-detect browser" - that's a start - makes you look like you're hiding something to the web platform...

As far as I know, this can’t really be bypassed anymore.

Persona verification is now a standard requirement, and it involves taking a live selfie together with identity documents.

In some regions this might not be fully enforced yet, but in general it’s becoming the default everywhere.

So in most cases, having access to the person is necessary.

What about plugging in an AI modifier into the camera app somehow to alter imaging? Just a thought if possible.

Interesting idea. I’m actually looking into this direction right now, as it’s a very relevant topic for both Etsy and Payoneer.

Let’s see how it develops hopefully there will be workable solutions.

Extremely easy , I know this from direct experience. In fact when I used real Canadian number while registering for US eBay, their stupid system thought it was a virtual number LOL! I had a huge red banner blocking me after registration. So yeah people don't realize how important is to have real phone number. What i think a lot of people don't realize. eBay's anti fraud system wants to make sure you are a real person. Anything and everything you provide has to be valid and identifiable easily.

I think the red flag might have been that you were using a Canadian number for the US...country needs to match up...just one aspect - but you're right about identifiability
