Selling expensive eBay item
 

So I am planning to sell a watch on eBay for about $2500 and wanted to see the safety of doing so. About 1 year ago I was scammed on an item where the buyer bought it then returned an empty box and made out with a ~$300 laptop. Paypal sided with them saying that they returned the purchase.

What are some issues I should watch out for? Does the buyer ultimately have the power when it comes to Paypal or their cc-company (i.e. to do a dispute)?

Yes Paypal will side with the buyer like 99.9% of the time. The best thing you can do is to not accept paymeny thru Paypal. I am assuming that the watch your selling is legit so just make your listing as accurate as possible and take tons of pictures so your buyers know exactly what they are getting to reduce your risk of a unhappy buyer. The watch is 100% fine. Anyway, so basically if I end up with a buyer who from the onset decides to scam me there's no way to fight it since I'll be out of the watch and my paypal will be negative, is that correct?

Yes that is correct. If someone is going to try and scam you on the watch unfortunately if you accept Paypal as the payment there isnt much you can do.

I just sold my Rolex on Craigslist 3 weeks ago .. met the guy at the Mayors where i purchased it and that was it .. i was scared of someone buying it filing a chrgeback and returning one that wasnt real .. plus craigslist i didnt have to pay fees , i probaly could of got a few hundread more on ebay - but didnt was to risk the loss .

Are there any other payment methods that protect the seller better? Escrow (real not a fly-by-night site) I am sure would do it since they release money once the other side acknowledges receipt but what about other credit-card-type processing sites?

What happens on non-Paypal sites if the buyer just does a chargeback after getting the item and either claims they never got it or that they returned?

the buyer normally has to show tracking that they returned the item as far as a chargeback or filing a claim ..but i think the rules always favor the buyer .. if the buyer has a history of chargebacks than it would help the seller probaly .. i just couldnt afford to take a chance as i was already losing and taking a beating on the watch as it was .
