Say i owe a bank from 3 years ago. Could I still open a account now with same bank?
 

Say I had a account with Bank Of America 3 years ago or so and it went in negative and they close the account and sent it to collections.

Do you think I could open another account in my name again with them? I have heard of some people doing this and the bank not catching on...

What are your thoughts and experience?

You need to go to the bank, to a branch office, and just apply with them there. That's your best bet... although, you could always use US bank, Suntrust, Chase, etc...

BoA usually want the negative balance restored. Quite a lot will depend on how far it went with collections AND the circumstances of why. Crucial to a new application is the amount. (None of which I need to know).

IMHO it's pretty hard to have a negative balance with a bank, but that's me, since I think it's a huge deal for me to keep my reputation with my banks 100% perfect.

I know it's out of topic, but it usually baffles me when someone has a negative with a bank. I just don't understand it.

Probably different in the US, but I had an account go over a couple hundred. I honestly didn't know as I wasn't using the account and moved. Found out a couple years later and paid it. They still told me to pound sand when I wanted to keep it open or get a new one.

Well see I was just going to reapply online and act like I was a brand new customer to see if they catch it. I did that with Suntrust once and they never caught except when I call customer service they ask if I want to take care of my other account neg balance, so Suntrust knows w..

Also with US bank, I went in the neg there back in 2002-2003 or so. Do you think it would be safe to try again with this bank online?

Sounds like they are suggesting your best chances are to go directly to the branch office, and put a nice amount down to start, roll the dice.

I'm in the same situation but only owe about $300 but for the past year or 2 but I've been too cheap to pay for it at the moment. Let me know how it goes. :)

May I ask, what are the other banks that are forgiving with past due small amounts?

Simple.. Anyone thats trying to rebuild there image or recently merged such as wells fargo and wachovia

Well I had an negative balance account with BOA from a few years back. They sent it to collections ( I had no idea of this ). I went early this year to open an account and they LET me open the account without any problems.

Few weeks later though I did get the collections letter and paid it off.

I too owed Wells Fargo about $400 in '06. I abandoned the account due to lack of funds (student) and reapplied in late '09 or early '10 online. I was accepted and preceded to open 3 more online and never once has Wells Fargo ever mentioned what I owed them. In fact, on my online statements it says I have been a 'valuable' customer since '04. I did have a name change but still have same SSN.

Wow - my experience with negative accounts in Canada is less than $100, yes they may well absorb it but anymore than that - you get phone calls. My own opinion is I would never become insolvent with any bank - it's not good for business since I use their other services.

But yes, U.S. system is qutie different so I can see.

Funny, few days after I opened this thread I got a collection letter from BOA..LOL
