new ebay account stopped from buying: Glitch?

I opened an Ebay account, tried to buy a $20 item (1st purchase), tried to do Buy It Now, was told I have exceeded my buying limit. Huh? Is this common?

Sorry if this is elsewhere, I missed it if so.

Did you have a previously banned eBay account?

NYCLiz 11-21-2010 02:26 AM

No. Not banned on ebay or paypal. I just wonder if it is a fluke.

jeffweico 11-21-2010 02:35 AM

It might be a fluke. And was this just opened? Or was it opened and then it sat for awhile?

NYCLiz 11-21-2010 02:38 AM

Just opened today.

Attention Buyer

To ensure that eBay remains a safe marketplace, we limit the quantity of items that can be bought or sold by a single account at one time. These limits may change over time and are determined by your previous site activity and overall performance.

Currently, your account has reached the limit for bidding and buying, but you can increase this limit by providing additional verification. Thank you for your understanding.

Please follow the directions below to continue.

...But nothing is written below

I have never run across this. If it were me, I'd just try again tomorrow. eBay's system *IS* under a heavy load right now. So there might just be some delay in the process. But if it does not work tomorrow, it probably wouldn't hurt to contact them through customer support - probably via email - to see what the problem is.

NYCLiz 11-21-2010 02:45 AM

I will try that. Thanks.

imjustme 11-21-2010 07:04 AM

Try again tomorrow. eBay sometimes has moments like these. I've had eBay tell me that I cannot sell anymore on an account that had 400+ feedback, and then the next day it let me list and has sold over 300 items since without further problems. It's a technical glitch.

forummember 11-21-2010 08:46 AM

Pretty strange. Take the advice of waiting till tomorrow, I've never heard of eBay stopping people from buying before.

NYCLiz 11-22-2010 09:05 PM

No responce from them and no change. Really weird. I wonder if it is worth trashing the account and starting over or if I should wait a while. Not one transaction, nuts.

May be linked. By error on their part or a glitch that makes them think its linked

Put it aside and make a new one from scratch. Come back to it latter and see. But I would always treat that account as somewhat tainted in the future. Just to be safe. Glitch or not, its not a great start...

NYCLiz 11-23-2010 11:42 AM

Sounds like good advice. I never considered that they might have mistakenly linked it to someone else. I just buy personal items and rarely ever sell on ebay. (Never really have.)

Thanks.

I got a message from ebay today asking me to take their survey. Oh, they do have a sense of humor. This has to be a fluke. Moving on.
